BB rips Welker

The NFL just said Welker's pick/block was legal. I guess with there is a new secret rule that recievers can take out db's on crossing routes? The NFL needs some consistency not excuses. If there was a ref mistake or missed call, they need to say it. If I was Seattle, I'd call the league and find out how they will call this next game. You may see some DB's take out and run through recievers right in the middle of the field I guess?

The fact is if Wes was a Pat and Talib was a Bronco and this happened we would be praising his toughness. Wes made a great play there, we have to get over it (we have Amendola, whoops he just tore his groin getting out of bed)
I wouldn't actually. I have no problem admitting when a Patriots player does something I don't agree with/like. Just because they play in NE doesn't make them infallible.

This legal pick play reminds me of the lateral/forward pass to break Brees passing record. The NFL changes precedent for certain players at times. Usually they admit when there's a bad call made.
The NFL should have said the Welker hit was a bad no call.

I don't know how I would've reacted but I think Salem is right that I wouldn't have lost sleep over it, and I think the majority of Patriots nation would be OK too. Remember Rodney Harrison?

That being said, this whole thread is really about Bill Belichick. Was Bill right to say what he said?

From a coach's perspective, it's totally right. He's not a fan--he can't be called a hypocrite on this. He thinks it's reckless to go on a kamikaze mission as Wes did. He doesn't coach his players to do it, and I bet he generally thinks it shouldn't be done at all. That's why he called it one of the worst plays.

So, in that sense, Salem's point is irrelevant. Belichick actually did speak out on this in the media.

Remember after the Browns game, there were many people who were quite vocal about the yards we got on the PI call late in the 4th quarter. I wouldn't be surprised at all if many people would disapprove if Welker did that to an opposing player.

As far as BB goes, I agree with what he said, that kind of play harms the game and is also very dangerous to the players. Nothing will change if no one speaks out about it.

Apparently Walter Thurmond agrees with Bill that it was a dirty play.

Just throwing this out there, but Thurmond is a FA at the end of the season. May be something for the Pats to consider.

BB's going to be teaching all recievers to knock DB's out of the game.

Watching the play again (and again and again), you can see that Welker shifts to his right to ensure that he makes contact with Talib. Unfortunately, Welker was moving at a good clip and his height ensured that he would hit Talib in a sensitive spot.

The crazy thing is that if Talib hit Welker like that, it would be a penalty.

I personally hope Seattle crushes the Broncos and gives Welker such a big concussion that forgets where he is.

this is hilarious if Wes did this last year to Pollard we would be praising him. We're talking about 5'8 guy coming off 2 concussions in 3 weeks. It is what it is, a good play by Wes that should have been a penalty but it wasn't. Wes did a smart play there

Thurmond: Welker hit uncalled forUpdated: January 23, 2014, 11:11

Wes Welker's hit on Aqib Talib in Sunday's AFC Championship Game didn't sit well with Seattle Seahawks cornerback Walter Thurmond.

"It was really uncalled for," Thurmond told reporters Wednesday. "The receiver ran right into the guy. I don't know the extent of the injury Talib had, but I thought we were supposed to protect football players in this league now. I guess not. I guess that only goes one way."

The NFL cleared Welker of any wrongdoing for his hit on the New England Patriots' cornerback that proved to be a key play in the Denver Broncos' 26-16 win on Sunday.

Bill Belichick's claim that Wes Welker tried to hurt Aqib Talib is a tough judgment, since intent to injure isn't in Welker's DNA, writes Mike Reiss. Blog

Wes Welker has had his share of injuries this season. He knows what it is like to sit out and said he did not try to collide with Aqib Talib, writes Jeff Legwold. Blog

"It was a legal hit," NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino said on the NFL Network on Wednesday night.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick blasted Welker for the hit on Monday, calling it "one of the worst plays" he's seen in 39 years of coaching. Talib suffered a knee injury on the play and didn't return to the game. Belichick said in a radio interview Wednesday that he didn't believe the cornerback would have to undergo surgery, however.

Thurmond, a fourth-year player, told reporters a penalty should've been called and that Welker may have received a "star" call from the officials.

"If you're intentionally coming at somebody, it's supposed to be a flag," Thurmond said. "But they didn't throw the flag on him. Some players get away with a lot more than other players depending on status, but that's just the nature of the game."

Thurmond said the play, which is called a "rub" or "pick" when a player tries to make contact with a defender, didn't apply because Welker never lifted his head.

"Welker had his head down, like he was coming down the whole time," he said. "That should be a flag, and he should be getting fined. There's a whole bunch of things that should happen in that situation, but I don't run the NFL."

Part of a secondary nicknamed the "Legion of Boom," Thurmond knows the Seahawks will have to deal with similar plays from the Broncos in the Super Bowl.

"We play a lot of man coverage, so we know they're going to have a lot of crossing routes like that," Thurmond said. "We're preparing for that situation to occur. We know that kind of contact is going to happen because we play so much man, and we'll be ready for it."

looks like the seahawks CB agrees with belicheck...lets be honest, if a DB did that to a receiver it would be called a penalty all day.

We had Mr Headhunter himself Rodney Harrison and you know what i love him. We need guys to get angry and big games. We have Brad Marchand we need a guy like that on the Pats

I find the remark from one of Goodell's stooges to be exactly what would be expected from the former employee of the Jets. if the Pats are playing a road game, you can bet that they will get screwed by the ref's. Starting with the one in a lifetime call on the field goal versus the Jets, the picked up flag in Carolina, the uncalled bearhug on Hooma in Miami and finally the non call on weasel welker in Denver. The irony is that the league has to go through contortions of the rules to justify their actions such as altering the rules interpretations, providing conflicting explanations, and now using the term nearly simultaneous.I mean how much doubletalk can anyone tolerate and still think the games a re officiated fairly. It is obvious to me that Goodell has annointed Manning as his golden boy this year like the murderer last year, and the seahawks will be playing against 12 men this SB. Even so i hope that the weasel tries his "legal play" against one of thee Seahawk defenders and finds out the third concussion is the worst.

Holy cow, you already wrote this. And people responded. Come up with something new or respond to the responses.

Thanks for writing what I've been thinking but I'd never have the grapes to post it myself. Bravissimo!

Seems like an opportune time for this blast from the past:

“I played with a lot of great players, whether that was Kevin Faulk or Randy Moss or Rodney Harrison, but Wes has been truly the greatest teammate you could possibly have,” Brady told the Globe in January. “His commitment to the team, his selflessness . . .

When Wes clears out on a route, he clears out the route better than anybody I’ve ever seen. He knows he’s not getting the ball, but he almost takes as much pride in that as he does on the 6-yard option route to get open. That’s everything you need to know about Wes.

Don't get me wrong. I am more pissed that Talib is so fragile that a collision with a smaller, lighter receiver can take him out. I would have rather had someone like Harrision just demolish him and take a penalty.

After Talib wen't out last year the way he did, I knew, with 100% certainty, that he would not make it through this years AFCCG.

Considering the fact that Talib has missed about 21-22% every year of his 6 year career and never actually completed a season at the end with his teammates, one may think that you're onto something here.

Some will say that you are being too harsh on Talib, and that this isn't fair.

I believe that you have somewhat of a valid point. This wasn't a shot aimed at the knees, or a clear head shot. It was a very hard shot that shouldn't be understated, but one would think that there would have been a lot of more physical CBs in the league that would have had to be 1/2 dead to sit out ONE conference championship game, let alone two in a row; especially after never sniffing the playoffs in his career before.

I just somehow couldn't imagine a lot of guys taking this hit and missing the rest of the entire game, knowing how important their role was.

It looks like the weasel's apologists are coming out of the woodwork now. They feel more comfortable blaming the victim of a cheap shot than the cheap shot artist. I guess if they were around when Tatum crippled Stingley, they would have blamed Stingley for not getting up. I don't know why they are are still calling themselves Pats fans. They obviously consider BB a liar and are still in love with the butterfingered dirtbag.

I like how one of Seattle defensive backs (not Sherman) weighed in on this as well, saying the play was wrong and should have been a penalty.

On the one hand, it's nice to hear because I agree. On the other, I am rooting for Seattle in the Superbowl and it would be nice if the team, especially Sherman, would just stay out of the headlines and focus on the game they are supposed to be preparing for. They need to win!
