Not to sound like too much of an ass here, but if he was truly "just banged up", he should have came back into the game. He jogged back out onto the field so one would have to think that he could have managed the pain as much as possible for the biggest game of the season. Unfortunately, now, this is two years in a row where he's been lost for the championship game and has battled injuries. I have to wonder just how much teams are going to offer him in FA.

exactly. why wasn't he out there? Could it be because he is a free agent? same thing last year- took himself out of the AFCCG in a contract year.

I was already thinking his contract should be pretty small.

This makes it even more so.

if he wants to come back its gotta be a long term incentive laden deal.

Medical source, league source, team source, apple sauce?

My first thought as well. In fact, I mentioned it during the game to people I was watching it with. If you're back on the sideline, and the secondary is clearly having issues stopping their weapons, why not give it a try? What are you holding back for (or why are they holding you back)? The next game?

I assume banged up is a medical term, so I'll wait until the doctor explains it.

this is one of two things he did not want to play through the pain so he can be 100% when the FA market opens or his agent is down playing the injury so he can still be the top free agent CB on the market, anyway you slice it this guy is not going to re-sign for pennies,

if it is the case of he could have played but just did not want to hurt his pay day will this guy still give his all on every play once he gets that long term deal ?

Ok, tough guy. It's like you want the Patriots to lose all the time. You revel whenever Talib or Brady makes a bad play

I thought it was his hip that was injured in the game, not his knee? So saying his knee has no structural damage is kind of irrelevant. I can't see BB ripping Welker (and basically standing up for Talib) if anyone thought he was just dogging it.

There's a pretty wide gap between "no structural damage" and "just banged up".

I totally agree with this. Talib's a great player, but if he's going to take himself out of the AFC championship game with anything less than a torn ligament, you can't count on him and you certainly have to think twice before giving him big money.

The information that there was "no structural damage" was not, in fact, available to Talib in-game.

I am stipulating to the "taking himself out of the game" part; it may also be the case that the training room staff said "uh-uhhhhh. playing with fire."

But let's just say the training staff said, "Up to you, Aqib. We don't have proof you're good to go but on the other hand, we don't really know until the MRI." In other words, let's say it's all up to Aqib.

Here are some outcomes he could imagine given the information at hand. Precede each with "maybe":

1) My body has no structural damage. I can numb it up and we win the game. We win, and my body is not damaged for the SB and/or my career. (optimal)

2) My body has structural damage. I numb it up and we win. My body is not further damaged in the SB but I am not 100%.

3) My body has structural damage. I make it worse by playing. We win the game.

4) My body has structural damage. I make it worse by playing. We lose the game anyway.

5) My body has structural damage. I end my career by playing. We lose (or win) the game.

As you can see the lack of information available militates for caution in this situation.

Now as you guys sort of imply, there are those who play a whole quarter with a broken arm and are still the most effective guy on the field, blah blah blah blah, things like that. We idolize those guys. They are heroes for being tough.

I don't think you can put those guys on too much of a pedestal these days however. For the dropoff to be that bad between a guy and the "next guy up" that you are lost w/o him, just raises the stakes if he makes the wrong call for years into the future.

Kinda rankles.

But what if he stayed in... and the MRI had said there was structural damage... and he probably made it worse by continuing to play?

If Krafty gets a crowbar and decides to open up his cob-webbed wallet, he should sign Revis over Talib. I love Talib but he's got the injury bug and is, how do I put this delicately, a lil soft.

Revis is a free agent?

Prudence isn't always the best trait for a football player.

How do you imagine that the Revis vs. Talib choice has anything to do with Kraft's willingness to spend money?

I agree with kontra, Talib looked shaken up leaving the field but he was walking fine, it looked like a rib in jury at the time, and when he returned to the bench it really looked like Dennard was imploring him to go back out. It is obviously specualtion but i thought he looked like he could go back out but didn't want to risk hurting himself with free agency coming up, and that's the second year in a row i felt that way after the AFCCG. As much as he helps the team when he is healthy and playing that is rare, and if the players and coaches feel like he won't go when they need him most then i would expect a pretty low offer from the Patriots, and no attempt to match. I almost never question the toughness of football players but watching that Sunday i could not escape the feeling that he was good to go but wouldn't.
