Colt Lyerla is a classic example of a guy who would have been a high draft pick if he did not quit the team and get busted for cocaine, both of which obviously destroyed his draft stock. However Lyerla is an amazing player who is an incredibly explosive Tight end who can still block,Walterfootball said at teh start of the season that "For the next level, Lyerla looks like a serious mismatch weapon. He has the ability to line up in a variety of places, so offensive coaches can use his special skills to exploit weaknesses in pass coverage. Lyerla looks like a perfect fit for an aerial NFL offense that likes to utilize the tight end." He also seemed like a first or second round talent before all the crazy and someColt Lyerla Scouting Report ~ 2014 NFL Draft - people think that he could be a bargain like Vontaze Burfict or Alfonzo Dennard, but at the same time maybe the patriots will try and avoid the guy with the iffy background given their recent experience with Aaron Hernandez, but at the same time they did not simply cut Dennard after his probation issue and using a late pick on the guy isnt a huge risk. Would you want the Patriots to take a shot at Colt Lyerla in the 5th-7th round?

Very unlikely. The biggest problem is why he was suspended then kicked off (OK, quit) the team. It was because he has a mental issue about taking instruction. As I read from a draft person I like a lot (Jeff Risdon), he just can't do what he's told. If he was told to run 2 laps he'd run 1. If he was told to run 1 he would run 2.

For these types of players I always use the disclaimer "maybe if Bill is really convinced" and that applies here but it seems more unlikely than ever.

The ONLY chance I see is with Bill and Chip Kelly being close maybe Kelly will give Bill a good report on him but it seems very unlikely.

So, the pats are going to hope a talented but troubled flex back falls on draft day amid concerns of off the field issues due to the pats relationship with his previous coach?

This story sounds familiar and unlikely to be repeated.

Keep Hernandez cousin off our Team meathead the next time you make a thread like this...you're getting Banned!:D

With Gronk's being as Fraglie as he is I would not want us to take a Flex TE banking on him being healthy. I hope we Draft a legit TE who can block and catch. If Ebron or Amaro are around in the Twenties we should Trade-up if not we take one in the Second or Third. I like the dept from this bunch its not nearly as bad as some think. That said No to Hernandez!

Lyerla is considered to be a good blocker, he is not a pure flex back like Hernandez. Lylera got kicked off the team and busted for having coke, Hernandez allegedly murdered a decent number of people so there is a bit of a difference.

I'm a HUGE fan of Lyerla as a player but it's obvious he has issues, the guy needs some counseling. If he can get his act together to the point where he can do what he's told and not be a cancer I'd be more than willing to spend a 6-7th round pick on him.

Beleave Cardinals are fine with the Honey Monster, Tyrant have done fine and showed the way. Can't see why a late flyer would be a problem if they likes him. Really comming Down to the convesations between him and the Clubs. Aslong the talent is there ppl will be draftet.

Being a coke head and smoking weed are verrrrry different situations.

Let's not forget perception of the team is of high value to Kraft and drafting a player with any similarities to AHern is never going to happen in the very next offseason.

I am shocked anyone thinks this is even a possibility or worth it.

you also don't know that he is a coke head.

Wasn't he arrested for cocaine possession? He's also a Sandy Hook "truther" who thinks the parents are "liars". Not an embarassment at all.

I want absolutely nothing to do with Colt Lyerla as a draft pick or an UDFA. Normally I'm all for taking a chance late on someone with character concerns, but they have to show some type of improvement with their problems. Lyerla's issues are far greater than Dennard's, Honey Badger's or even Da'Rick Rogers who is more talented and still went undrafted last year. Apart from his history of violence and drugs, this is a guy that couldn't handle the structure and discipline at Oregon, there is no chance he could play for BB. Add in the fact that two weeks after he left the Oregon program to focus on the NFL draft he got arrested for cocaine possession. He has shown no signs of improvement or any indication of getting his life in order.

Lets not forget this is also a guy that never even had great production in college. He only has 34 career receptions for 565 yards, with 16 rushing attempts for 94 yards. He still had a lot to prove on the field before he would be a high draft pick. To me he simply isn't worth the headache to bring onto this team, especially after the Hernandez situation.

Remember that we have both Talib and Blount, neither particularly notable as upstanding citizens historically, fitting in to this team quite well. I think it's less about the character per se, and more about how the players fit into the structure of the locker room. If BB thinks Lyerla responds well to the rigours of the locker room then I think that changes things.

But this was after the Hernandez debacle.

My main pros:
Can mirror AH's play
With TB almost 40 in a few years, he needs some offense around him, even for a short time like AH
BB has great track-record with troubled players
My main cons:
Seems absolutely fuggin crazy
Snorts coke, not smokes a spliff or two, he snorts coke, huge no-no
Unproven, must be rusty too
Can a personality like his influence guys like Dennard, Talib, Blount, Spikes, Thompkins (troubled players)?

Sorry but I don't see the connection. My point about the locker room wasn't related to Hernandez.

Drug issues and we all know now ahern was usually quiet in the locker room. He has personality issues. I don't think with the latest ahern debacle, we will take a chance.

I'm not sure BB sees it in those terms. It will come down to interviews with the player or team mates, coaches etc. I could however see Kraft ruling out Lyerla from the get go (more for his Sandy Hook comments than the drugs).

My biggest problem with him is he doesn't take well to coaching at all and couldn't even handled the structured environment at Oregon. The structure and discipline in New England would be 10x that of Oregon which he already quit. Unless he has miraculously grown up and fixed all his issues, which I haven't seen any evidence to suggest that he has, then he is an implosion waiting to happen. There are so many other options out there, some of which actually produced in college that I can't see why we would even take a chance on him.

Some people need the right people and environment around them to flourish. If the Patriots have him on their board and take him, I'm not going to cry over spilt milk. Everyone loves a redemption project and Belichick loves draft value.

People should be careful to remember the sins of Hernandez are not the sins of Lyerla. He should be considered on his merits alone.
