Best one-year wonder in Patriots history

Andy Katzenmoyer - #1 pick, starting LB, played one year, then he walked away from the game after a neck injury.

Trivia note: he was one of the compensation picks when Tuna left for the Jets.

1. Robert Edwards
2. Ty Poole

Honorable mention: Byron Cox.

Craig James was part of a RBBC in 1984, but looked awesome when he got his carries. When he took over the bulk of carries in 1985, he looked like he was going to be a stud RB for the rest of the decade. Then 1986 rolled around and he disappeared off the map. Hannah retired after 1985, but you can't tell me James missed him *that* much.

Regards,
Chris

Like a baby misses boobies I'm guessing.

Are you serious?

I'll go for D-I-D Did.

best one year wonder?

Terry Glenn

50% Edwards - 50% Brisby

Ditto!! Not too many people remember this guy but I was extremely bummed out after '83 season....thought he was the real deal and then he disappeared. Wasn't he from the midwest? can't recall the college we drafted him from......

Clayton "Monsoon" Weisuhn was from Angelo State in San Angelo, Tx. This guy was going to be something if not for the injuries. He replaced Nelson, who was injured and the team never lost a beat. I thought he was their 2nd best LB that year, next to Tippett.

Ron Berger de had one good year gone forever

John Stephens and Leonard Russell deserve some mention as well.

These were the two I immediately thought of. Weren't they both Rookies of the Year as well? What a tease these two were, a ray of hope in the Dark Ages.

Didn't something tragic happen to Stephens? I know it was Tony Collins (I think?) who died in a hotel room of an OD, but I thought JS fell into a life of crime/drugs and also died tragically. Am I wrong?

Also, mad props to whoever mentioned Stephen Starring.

One I'd like to add is Maurice Hurst (Hearst?).

He had one solid year at CB and was allegedly on the cusp of being a perennial All Pro.

Are you maybe thinking about Rod Shoate?

players whos careers were cut short due to injuries shouldn't be included in this list. Therefore no Hart Lee Dykes.

My pick would be Vincent Brisby. Everybody thought Brisby was going to be a stud WR for many years but it never happened.

John Stephens and Leonard Russell deserve some mention as well.

You broke your own rule. Brisby's fall was due to injury. He went from starter to never playing again due to injury in 1996. (He was more than a 1 year guy also)
Stephens while not injured on the football field, was almost killed off it. (Was it knifed or shot?)

I think Edwards is the clear cut choice because the question was ONE year wonder.
James was my first thought, but again he had a good 1984, before his fantastic 1985, then he was horrible.

It wasn't even a year, it was a game, but this thread reminded me of Corey Croom. After using Marion Butts all year, and having Leroy Thompson as the backup/3rd down back, in 1994, Parcells gets the team to the playoffs and then starts Corey Croom, who may have had 15 carries during the season. Bizarre.

I would have to say Robert Edwards and thats only because he had that horrible injury at the Pro Bowl activities but other than that he would have had more good years.

Robert Edwards was definitely mine for the offense for most recent history.

I'm serious. James *completely* lost it in 1986. He went from stellar to awful in one year and remember, he was young. Hannah, while still a good guard in 1985, wasn't the all pro he was years prior. It's one thing for a young RB to go from excellent to mediocre due to losing a lineman, but from excellent to horrible? That's a stretch.

Regards,
Chris

This hurts to say as he is one of my favorite players ever......

but Corey Dillon 1600 his first year but besides TD not much more after.
That's what I was going to say too. He had a great career in Cincinnatti and one great year here, but for us he was a one-year wonder.

Okay, come to think of it, the Pats sure have had a lot of running backs out of the draft showing promise and then falling off the map -- though none with the tenacity of Robert Edwards (current star running back of the Montreal Alouettes.) By the way, he's been at the top of CFL stat categories the last couple or three years. Led the league last year in total touchdowns, in fact. But I digress.

One name I'd dearly love to throw out there is Tony Eason. Yes, he "led" the Pats to the super bowl against the Bears. He was our anti-Brady, a generation earlier. Came out of nowhere, with not-so-spectacular stats, people called him a good game manager, a leader, that kinda stuff, and then, well, nothing happened.

I still remember people in the 80s saying to me, "yeah but they'll be back, they got that Boomer Eason kid, right?"

Yeah, Tony Eason needs to be mentioned on this list.
