Why does the league want to ruin the game: NFL may negate TD on taunting penalties

Exactly. I don't see why this shouldn't be an unsportsmanlike infraction with some real teeth.

Because it's a really stupid idea.

I meant that post as TIC but it seems I've become pigeon holed as a 100% Goodell hater...and I'm OK with that....why does a grown man like me get so psychotic over any of this?...well, primarily because the MALIGNANT DWARF BRAINED CORPORATE THUGDELL demands it. There have been a number of intelligent options proposed in this very thread. That, however, does not excuse the repugnant, idiotic, mind blowingly moronic suggestion that EARNED points be taken away because of over exuberance post play. It's a horrible disfigurement of OUR game that this turd is putting on the table. How about NO COMMISSIONER ON EITHER SIDE OF THE FIELD WITH EITHER TEAM during a game...HUH?...how about you do that, you get suspended, fired, brought up on criminal conspiracy charges and incarcerated when convicted for the better part of ten years. See if the corpse of Leon Hess can FIX that for this scumbag.

Pretty much all taunting is stupid and unnecessary, but it would take a post of PatsfanKen proportions to outline all of it, however the rules are just as stupid and only lead to bigger problems, like the better team losing because of a bad call based on taunting rules. All they have to do is keep the current rules and tell teams that they want it to stop and want coaches to address it so they don't have to make more stupid rules.

The real thing that is going to ruin the game is the insistence by the NFL and its owners to go to an 18 game season and expanded play-offs. Nothing could be more clear from the beating these players have taken this season that there is absolutely no room for more games for these players, they have maxed out, and creating a longer season is going to ruin careers and cause even more serious health problems for them down the road. It is the worst idea this league has ever had, but unfortunately unmitigated greed is a hard opponent to overcome, and the owners are seemingly hell bent on succumbing to it. A real shame, they are going to ruin a really good game and league.

I don't agree with this thought. Definitely extended playoffs is a stupid idea but having more games in the regular season is not necessarily a bad thing. It's just that teams/rules will have to adjust to accommodate the extra games. Certainly, teams will be on the margin of whether or not it make sense to start all your top players every game and roster management (giving players rest) will be a key component of overall strategy... and it already should be to some extent although teams seem not to care about that much.

Taunting just shows a lack of class and proves you are a loud mouth lowlife with low expectations for yourself. I can't stand it and watching it trickle down to my kids youth and middle school leagues is beyond disgusting to watch.

Act like you been there. Celebrate after you score all you want with your teammates etc.. Diving into the end zone grabbing your ****, waving by to an opponent at the 30 yard line only to have to shutup and run faster the last 5 yards because the defender caught you makes you look like an ass. How anyone thinks this is ok is beyond me. How about we appreciate sportsmanship and not lowlife antics displayed by people who have low self confidence, but compensate for it with a false bravado.

Because it's a really stupid idea.
The infraction would apply ONLY in the case of egregiously overt taunting DURING a scoring play. Are you cool with what Golden Tate did Monday night? That is the kind of nonsense they're attempting to address.

Which Patriot tossed a ball to a ref a year or two ago and the ref didn't see it coming and gave the Patriots a 15 yard penalty?

Brandon Lloyd. It was a costly penalty, too.

Bring in that rule and some stupid ref will decide at some crucial moment in a game that high stepping is considered taunting. The TD would be called back resulting in public outcry. The league in it's infinite wisdom will decide to ban all forms of celebration in scoring a TD both directly before and after.

suspend the player then...after all, when little kids in grown men's bodies act like brats, they need to be disciplined. One game first offense...4 games 2nd...and form a discipline committee or review board INDEPENDENT of the NFL offices. A board of independent arbitration. This league DEMANDS decision making that is IMPARTIAL moving forward. This one eyed, mongo bulldell dog and pony show HAS TO BE neutered. Just LOOK at some of this cretin's "decisions". remember the Sal Alosi incident??????? He swept it UNDER THE RUG for krissakes!!!!..and now we're supposed to go along with our teams being ripped off for hard earned points because of a specious judgement call by an official? Like the head ref in last year's Super Bowl??? are you kidding me???? Just what the hell is the definition of "taunting" then??? Outline it specifically...a player scores and turns to the goalpost instead of his sideline, ref throws flag, "taunting!!!!", asked later, ref says I thought he turned to taunt the defender but nothing really happened but still, THEY LOSE SIX POINTS, other team wins by three...TOO BAD!!! Taunting Rule!!!

please, this has NOTHING to do with sportsmanship or morality and any of these other reasons borne of anger at the taunting of players. It has EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THE PLAY. The play is made..you NEVER take away points earned on the field because of a moral lapse post score. I mean, how can you be serious about this??????????????????? This is THE veritable Pandora's Box. Once you can deduct points arbitrarily from any contest it ceases to be a contest.

Lloyd last season, and we're not even two weeks removed from seemingly random enforcement of an obscure rule deciding a Pats' game. Giving officials more control over the game is bad, every season I'd expect dozens of blatant examples getting ignored with a couple of guys getting flagged for just slowing up.

Suspend Golden Tate...do NOT sanction the entire team and arbitrarily deduct points affecting an outcome.

They're not talking about "post-score" transgressions, J., just shenanigans that occur DURING a scoring play (like Tate on Monday night -- am I the only one who saw that play?).

Whether I'm cool, or not cool, with Tate's version of taunting is irrelevant to my position. The taunting has no impact on the actual game itself, and it is not something that's potentially harmful in the manner of a late hit or a punch after the whistle. Like the celebration penalties, taunting penalties are stupid attempts to ride herd on players by punishing the teams for actions which are irrelevant to the actual game.

Will you be defending the league when it starts deducting points because some player had the wrong color shoes on, too?

I don't think this new proposed rule goes far enough. I think the player flagged with violation should be summarily executed by firing squad in the end zone.
lol that will get people talking about the game for sure.

like when the guy intercepts at his 5 yard line , runs back free and clear and the last twenty yards holds the ball up turning back to the rest of the players on the field, and high steps it into the end zone turning to fall on his back at the goal line? Is THAT taunting? Or not? Who makes THAT call? Take away the INT and runback because the guy is a friggin JERK? The whole league is populated by egocentric jerks. Look, I hate the grandstanding, the taunting, the Suh assaults, the Dez Bryant outbursts....SUSPEND...every subsequent act, increase suspension time. Deduct points IN GAME? then you have tennis or golf. I like tennis and golf I think their quaint rules of decorum are silly. Racket abuse????...but it's agreed upon by all. THIS??? This is preposterous. You are introducing earned points deducted by what can only be described as an arbitrary judgement call into a game with enough in game problems as it is. Hit their pocketbooks, don't throw haymakers at the game itself.

and...BTW...we are all just a bunch of back slapping homers always agreeing with ourselves, as this thread so eloquently illustrates....so that Simpleminded freak is right...Sapoaga is a lousy signing....:violent:

Suspending the best WR the team has right now is not sanctioning the team?

I think there should be a bigger penalty for garbage like Tate pulled. It's bad for the image of the game, and leads to the possibility of some bigger idiot taking out the guy who is taunting and injuring him. Current penalty does jack all with the amount of touchbacks in the league right now. If nothing else they should jack the player for a huge chunk of his paycheque. That would sanction the player without actually hurting his team.

Or just acknowledge that football players are human beings and will sometimes do things that show them to be more than just automatons.

They can celebrate once they get in the endzone.
