Report: Gronkowski May Require Back Surgery

Some of those porn stars can really damage your back. They just get way too creative and you never know what to expect next. They pull off some kinda triple Lindy using the headboard, mattress, and chandelier and I swear that you always feel it the next day.

I hate it when that happens.

;)

Chronic back pain is never a good thing. I had a severely pulled muscle in my back and could barely move for two days. I couldn't even imagine disc issues. I hope Schefter's report is the more true of the two, and I would put my stock in his sources more than anyone else, but you never know.

Really, the people that were trying to argue that Gronk isn't injury prone were grasping at straws. Being injury prone doesn't necessarily mean that the guy misses games. Being injury prone literally means that the guy or player in question has a history with injuries which, in turn, makes them more prone to getting injuries (particularly in the same area of the body) in the future. Gronk came into the league with back issues. It's why he dropped to us. The team took a chance and it's been good up until now. But if it's reported as being chronic, and if the report is true, I can't think of a worse chronic problem that a football player could possibly have. Especially a receiver and a guy that has to regularly put his body into blocks against bohemoth DL. The guy is prone to injury. Hopefully it turns out to be what Schefter reported, and is minor.

Gronk is on his way to being the Peter Forsberg of the NFL. When he plays, hes the best. The problem comes when/why he doesn't play enough.

Then there are guys like Curtis Martin who was supposed to be a first round pick but fell to the third round because he has some chronic knee issues when playing at the U of Pitt

Martin's injury never hampered his early professional career

just goes to show you, sometimes an injury reappears...sometimes it never returns

Not sure I buy this 100%. Is there something wrong with Gronk physiologically that caused his arm to break on a play when it wouldn't for others? How about his ankle? Frankly, if there was any reason why his ankle might not have been hurt had he been another player, it is the fact that Pollard wouldn't have been dragging behind him for that long.

Only the back fits your "injury prone" definition, and that could certainly be problematic, though the picture is still unclear. Football is a tough game, particularly for the TE position, which has one of the highest injury rates on the field.

They are now saying that the back surgery is likely to be scheduled 4 weeks after the arm surgery...that would put him out of both operations finished in about 6 or 7 weeks from now and then time to heal.

6-7 weeks puts him now in early-mid July after both surgeries . ..healing time is the question here

I can't envision him being able to recover and fully ready for contact from both surgeries by week 1 - The PUP list is looking more likely by the day whether we like it or not IMO.

If you watched the Miami game before he reinjured the arm,you could see he wanted absolutely no contact on that arm and it was stupid for the team doctors to let him play in that game, with his arm in that cast,it was practically dangling at his side all game...

I do believe that something happened in the Miami game during a tackle to loosen up his arm for more injury the next week.

I saw that, but I honestly am not sure what it has to do with my earlier post.

I seriously doubt he did much of anything to his arm in that Miami game, it was just a freak fall on an arm that NE was pushing their luck with anyway.

And I hope they don't push their luck by having him out there by week 1 not being fully healthy to play

The PUP list to me seems the right thing to do,I see no way is he 100% by week 1 and I don't think they should gamble unless he recovers more rapid than we expect.

The arm is one thing...the back is MUCH more dangerous to fu(k with.

oh shut up. Wasn't hearing this from the doom and gloom crowd when he played in 46 straight games to start his career. But because a guy landed on his ankle and some jag ran through his arm on an extra point he's glass now.

You want glass, see Bob Sanders

He broke the arm by extending it rather than tucking it in, he likely did so because he doesn't trust himself to do it without extending. Extending the arm really isn't necessary if you've built up some decent skill, the rolling action will occur because of the torso.

Take a look at the beginning of this vid and notice that there's virtually no impact absorbed by the arm.

It's especially frustrating because there are many NFL players that can breakfall exceptionally well.

Ultimately I see Gronk being a chronic injury case. He plays with reckless abandon and won't stop anytime soon, combine that with his previous injuries and I doubt we'll ever see him play a full season again.

I'd actually be ok with trading him when we can get good value.

LOL

Patriots would struggle without Gronk, opening door for Dolphins
The potential loss of Rob Gronkowski would seriously diminish the Patriots' chance of winning the AFC East this season.

Gronkowski is arguably the best tight end in the game, with a combination of size, speed and athleticism that makes him indefensible between the hashes. Tom Brady depends on him as the No. 1 option in the passing game, which sets up the rest of the Patriots' playmakers on the perimeter. This is particularly important without Wes Welker (who joined the Denver Broncos as a free agent) in the lineup to control the middle of the field from the slot receiver position. Without Gronk, the Patriots' opponents would focus their efforts on shutting down Aaron Hernandez, forcing Brady to rely on Danny Amendola and a cast of lesser names to carry the offense.

Given the improvement of the Miami Dolphins on both sides of the ball, the potential lack of punch from the Patriots' offense could result in Ryan Tannehill and Co. wearing the crown at season's end.
