Jeff Demps and a 7th round pick traded to Bucs for RB LeGarrette Blount

Don't get the negativity here about this trade. I like this a lot. Big strong back who has some wiggle and can catch passes out of the backfield. At least Blount will play for the Pats, Demos probably won't even play that much for the Bucs.

From rotoworld:

Patriots acquired RB LeGarrette Blount from the Bucs in exchange for RB Jeff Demps and a seventh-round pick.
It's stunning Bucs GM Mark Dominik was able to get anything for the one-dimensional, talent-deficient Blount, though Demps has made football second fiddle to his track career. That was a no-go for Bill Belichick, but apparently not his pal Greg Schiano. Blount is little more than a veteran flier for a Pats team that's already four deep at running back, but they'll presumably see how he fares as a short-yardage hammer in camp. Like every other role Blount has tried to fill, he's not effective in short-yardage situations. He won't be guaranteed a roster spot.

Worth a shot Demps wasn't going to do anything but end up on IR if he came back with a track body for weeks 6-16. Blunt may at least get some TDs.

No guarantee that Blount makes the roster out of camp. Did nothing for the Bucs last year. Bad pass protector according to Bedard. Considering he is a big, bruising RB at age 26 (27 in December) and the historically short careers of big RB's, he could be close to the end.

Re: Bucs trade RB Blount to Patriots

To quote Greg Bedard's thoughts on the trade from just a few moments ago:

"Sure, why not. Seventh rounders are freebies."

1.3 million contract that the Patriots picked up.

So is that a medical condition or serious lack of work ethic? If it's the latter, you'd think the Pas would have done their homework and never agreed to a deal in the first place. Who initiated the trade talks?

Well if a combination of lethargy and stupidity is a medical condition then yes, he has a medical condition. :D. Seriously, does he have a sleep medical condition that the Patriots' know about? Who knows...

According to past stories, Schiano wanted to dump the guy for some time due to his serious lack of work ethic. Blount lost his starting job last year due to his work ethic (according to reports). The two years prior to that, on the field, the guy was a productive runner according to quite a few statements. A very physical runner.

I like this trade because it cost almost nothing, Blount has proven ability, and the Patriots are an atmosphere that a guy like this will be given the right atmosphere to get his head and ass wired properly. If not then we dump him and are barely worse for the wear.

I missed the part where this salary was guaranteed.

If he doesn't get it together, I sure hope he is cut quickly. Would hate to see a bad apple placed in that RB group with the young potential there. No veteran presence there anymore (besides Leon Washington) with Woodhead gone.

As long as he does not throw any punches at any Patriot......

Good pickup Blount is a mean RB and hard to bring down. I'm glad to see him leave our division. Has the same running style of riggins or kind of like Corey Dillon. Very hard to stop him making 1-4 yards on 3rd and one with even 8 in the box and the Bucs mediocre OL, and that's not just against our poor DL. He's a real bruiser and runs mad.

For some background, prior to last year when he lost his starting job under Schiano, his first two years in the league produced in 27 games played: 385 carries, 1788 yards (4.6 avg), 11 TDs, longest runs of over 50 yards in both years.
This guy is far beyond a 7th round pick in what he has produced. But, again, he is the polar opposite of what a 'Patriot' player is. Will he make a change and become more of a Patriot player??? I guess we will find out. We certainly have a ton of good bodies at the RB position for camp.....

Don't know if he'll make it but BB seems to be making a concerted effort to get bigger and tougher.

I hear what you are saying and don't completely disagree. However, the benefit of the Patriots is the gravitas the Patriot "leaders" carry. The voice of a barking BB carries more weight than Blount has ever seen. Then TFB, Vince, one of our new pickups, others.....there is weight to the Patriots leadership and incredibly professional atmosphere. When you are on a Tampa Bay, the coach, the QB and others don't carry the weight due to a lack of winning history. For the Patriots, IMHO, Blount will quickly see this highly professional, all business, winning matters period! type atmosphere. He will either fit in or get bounced. Chances one malcontent could alter that is pretty small.......

I know his agent said some things about wanting to run track, but I didn't realize Demps was so opinionated about his own schedule

It Is What It Is » In Focus: Examining Patriots swap of Jeff Demps for LeGarrette Blount

“Listen coach, I want to do both, but in order for me to get to where I want to be on the track and field side, it’ll take a full year of preparation,” Demps told Sports Talk Florida. “And after the season, if you guys are willing to let me come back — you know, probably midseason — and work out and train and get ready for the season, I’ll be able to do that. If not, then I guess I’ll just focus on running.”

Chris Price continues with his analysis to say:

As for how this impacts New England, Blount is an intriguing addition to an already full-house backfield. At 6-feet and 247 pounds, the 26-year-old Blount is a big, physical back in the mold of Brandon Bolden. (As a result, if he’s healthy coming into the 2013 season, he could battle with Bolden for playing time.) He’s a between-the-tackles runner who put up some good numbers — as a rookie in 2010, he rushed for a career-best 1,007 yards on 201 carries, adding six touchdowns.

However, his production has dropped off dramatically over the last two seasons, to a point where he had 151 yards on 41 carries this past season in Tampa Bay. (To be fair, some of that could be because of the recent emergence of Doug “Muscle Hamster” Martin, who got the bulk of the carries last year and finished the season with 319 carries for 1,454 yards.) This spring, he signed a one-year, $1.75 million deal with the Bucs that contained no guaranteed money.

Ultimately, in the eyes of the Patriots, it allows them to get rid of a meddlesome issue involving Demps in exchange for the chance to build some depth at running back with no long-term financial ramifications. A win-win in New England.

Bucs traded this 7th rounder from the Patriots, to the Vikings!

As long as he does not throw any punches at any Patriot......

I don't necessarily agree. I am good with having a few players who are looking to punch someone in the mouth. The Patriots can use a few guys like that. But it has to be in the context of 'I want to win so bad I will punch someone in the mouth as well as do everything I can on and off the field to win'. It's the second part of that which is in serious question....

That might be the worst analysis I've ever seen. From our NO poster Pheiren (sp) who is very good, we get a different picture.

How many dimensions do you expect from a 6 foot 250 LB back who gained 1,000 yds at 5.0 a carry his rookie year? That's a damn good average for a guy that size.

This is why nobody should go to Rotoworld for opinion. Maybe the writer doesn't like him, but talentless?

Rotoworld is only good for quoting legitimate sports publications, usually out of context, so the meaning is changed.

When the Pats acquired jeff Demps he offered the possibility of solving our vacancy at KO returner and might contribute to PR too.

Then the Pats signed Leon Washington, proven league leader in KO returns. They also re-signed Julius Edelmen and a proven league leader at PR too. So Demps had no job anymore, and then he wanted to play two sports, taking time off of football.

The only RB position that the Patriots had was the lack of a short yardage Hammer to get TDs and FDs. Blount is just that a proven Hammer, a FB who can get the First Downs.

BB improves the Team a little once more.:snob:

I cannot understand how people who claim to know the NFL have no clue how good Blount was as recently as 2011. He didnt play much last year. Have you people heard of a guy they have at RB named Doug Martin? Yes, Blount has his weaknesses, if you fall behind hes not a pass blocker so he wont be in the game. But if you need someone to pound out the yards this guy is way better than a 7th round pick. Locals, i know, over evaluate their own players, but when did Jeff Kemps become Gayle Sayers?

This is a good move and basically a freebee. Blount will be a great 4th quarter running back. he doles out punishment and won't go down on the first hit. Corey Dillionish for what I can tell.

I have to agree. Just watched some vids and, although he's no hall of famer, I haven't seen anything like this since Earl Campbell.

Maybe he's an ahole, but to say he has no talent...I'm dumbfounded.

Watch this.
