RFA WR Danario Alexander

I'd much rather take a chance on Heyward-Bey. I know he's considered a bust, but his 2011 season is far better than any season Amendola, Sanders or Alexander have had. I imagine his price is going to be reasonable, and I really believe he could be a threat on the outside with so much focus on our TEs and Slot.

Since he got Palmer at QB, who is not in the same stratosphere as Brady, his productivity saw an immediate rise. Why couldn't a similar jump in effectiveness happen with another move to a better QB and more weapons? I think you really have to throw out his first two years when he was dealing with JaMarcus Russell, Bruce Gradkowski and Jason Campbell at QB. Oakland has just been a place where WRs go to die. Look what happened to Randy's production when he went there. I'd love to see us take a chance with this guy.

The Pats should be able to afford both, and I would strongly attempt to sign both.

We need multiple quality bodies at WR, but there are only a handful of those remaining
in free agency, and there are not enough picks to fulfill this need via the draft alone.

Re: Danario Alexander: the big, fast WR the Pats seek, and he is hiding in the weed

or is JM's judgement suspect?

So far is is O for three and a fourth one DA in the wings. Perhaps let someone else say yes or no on Alexander.

Good shout, one of the draft regs i think manx started a thread on him here at the start of FA. He's exactly what we need and wouldn't cost all that much. If we signed him and took a WR at some point in the first 3 rounds I'd feel alot better about our wideout situation.

Heyward-Bey is another i'd like to take a chance on at the right price.

He can't be worth than ocho and he'd be about 1/3 the price.

Are we really improving the team if we use this as the bar going forward?

He might be worth a flyer. I remember watching him play a fair amount last year and the man is very tough and talented...and according to him "His knees felt like 100%" last season......But he did have an ACL tear in the left knee....and then tore the "cadaver" ligament as well on a reverse play....and had to have it re-done......I think he had one more surgery to fix cartilage or something (From what I read)....But I don't see where he had 5 surgeries on his knees...like someone on here reported. Like everyone else...IF he can stay healthy he could be a HUGE factor for our offense!

Here's his official injury list over his NFL career....2 surgeries on left knee in college....Not sure how many in college......The knee has been an issue.....and he HAS had alot of Hamstring issues.....Could be a big roll of the dice!

Amendola is ten times the player those other three are.

In general he might make a lot of sense if he came with a low price tag but he makes absolutely NO sense for the Patriots, he's neither white nor smurf sized, what are we going to do with him?

Don't fix what's not broken, hiring Alexander would require a change to our current system which has yielded unparalleled success, therefore it makes 0 sense to do anything different;)

Three Years
. Remember it takes them upon average that long to develop full potential. Can't put TB is a "time out" until then. Gronk was an early development guy and it only took him two years to develop. Look at Welker? How many years for him? He wasn't a star at first.

Hopkins seems nice. But he has the word not that strong. Hopkins is a pure hands catcher but he doesn’t necessarily have the strongest hands. Can he win a high percentage of jump passes? Hopkins is not a truly explosive player. The issue is “can Hopkins continue to get open and make regular plays in the bigger, faster world of the NFL?”

Yes time will tell. If you are waiting for a ready WR, Stedman Bailey is not as fast or tall but he makes plays and is more NFL ready WR in this Draft. You might get him in the third. I am thinking Hopkins reminds me of Chad Jackson. While we wait on them to get NFL ready, why not a available piece with some upside to hold the fort. I read you on a WR like Hopkins, but BB won't go WR in round one as where they expect him to go or maybe even two.

I like Bailey, I like Patton too. The point is they need to find one in the draft that will be ready now and work the outside and deep. He doesn't need to catch 100 balls, but he needs to be able to work the outside and catch 30-40. Ideally, he could be worked in behind Lloyd or Sanders.

I'd like the Patriots to take a flier on Alexander and add Sanders. If they can move Mallett before or during the draft there will be some damn fine middle round receiver talent available. Let's hope BB goes Tight End on the receivers this year. They're due for an overhaul.

Great post!!!! The Draft is great but it is not as effective as free agency on a specific target. Both have failures but you have NFL tape on a FA. The Draft choice is a mystery until he gets a few years under his belt.
We have to fill in the wholes now and see where the Draft falls.

Excellent sir.

Snake, Can I beg to differ . We were nailed in the Championship game and the Super Bowl with that Offense. We were caught with our pants down. A deep big fast target is a new dimension.
Maybe we can spray paint him and change his name to Morty or Buddy or Wilhelm?

Done Cousin. Let's do it.

I think Snake's kidding there.

DW, every time I see you addressing folks as Cousin, I think of the bad guy in Waterworld...

...which is fine with me, since I am a smoker :)

Pardon the sidetrack cousins... carry on!

You guys talking about trading Mallett for mid-round picks are insane. Not only does he provide injury protection for a QB entering his late 30s, but he is the most talented QB the Pats have ever developed, meaning there is a good chance that he is going to be ready to be a starting QB by the time his rookie deal is up after the 2014 season. The Pats would have to look long and hard at cutting Brady at that point (his last 3 years are not guaranteed). Given the importance of a quality QB developed in the Pats system, I wouldn't trade Mallett for anything less than a high first rounder.

Unfortunately, the patriots seem to only go after short, slow, limited athletically type wide receivers. Alexander would easily be the best WR on our team. Right now, we have the worst WR corps in the NFL.

Yep, Chad Jackson, Brandon Tate, Taylor Price, all short, slow, athletically challenged prospects who couldn't produce for them, on the other hand the one big fast athletic player they got, (Wes Welker), played like a Hall of famer. go figure......................

Mallett is a stiff. Literally. He has terrible footwork, has no drive in his legs, doesn't move around the pocket well, and can't get through his read pregressions very well either. He's tall and has a gun. That's very little to go with the fact he has no flair for the game. He's a BB Frankenstein monster - resembling an inert/lifeless Bledsoe (after he was shell shocked), but not even that good - ready to be dealt off this year for a pick, or next year if BB can get more from "showcasing" him in this preseason.

Do you actually think we can win the SB with this goon at the helm?

Well, I'm pretty sure Brady won't be looking to move along after 2014.

I already wrote that I wish the Browns had their 2nd rounder, because I'd deal Mallett and next years 6th for that in a heartbeat.
