Could Brandon Spikes be suspended for his current tweet?

The proper penalty for him is that he should have to go to a gay marriage rally and pose for pictures with his arm around the (male) organizers.

I actually found that funny!

I did laugh out loud.

Apologies if anyone is offended

If we're looking for proper penalties, the proper penalty for those complaining about what Spikes tweeted is public humiliation and revocation of all speech rights.

If we're going to go over the top, let's go over the top. And let's not go bringing gay marriage into this.

The only ones who would complain about that are the gay spiders.

What an idiot.

Well, Spikes isnt a homosexual and said it... and then referred to one being in your bathtub... there's a difference and sorry you missed it. It wouldn't be an issues if he didnt offend people.
You can't be serious.

Well I should hope he's not a homosexual, that would make him scared of himself..

It seems to be you that's missing something here. Let's restate the joke word for word: “I’m homophobic just like I’m arachnophobic. I have nothing against homosexuals or spiders, but I’d still scream if I found one in my bathtub!”

a. At no point is he saying anything about homosexuals being in anyone's bathtub but his own.

b. The phrasing and punchline of this tweet makes it very clear that it's a joke. This means what he said doesn't necessarily depict his own views (as said it was a retweeted joke he heard).

c. It says NOTHING inflammatory (pun?) or derogatory about homosexuals. The MOST you could infer is he obviously found the joke hilarious, and that MAYBE he found it so funny because he himself is homophobic. On the other hand, I am not homophobic, and I found the joke hilarious.

So basically we have controversy because Brandon Spikes may or may not be homophobic; not anti-gay, not malevolent, maybe a bit ignorant about homosexuals. Maybe.

I get that Brandon, as a public figure, represents the Patriot brand and as such is obliged to conduct himself in a manner befitting of the organization. But these guys have to have the freedom to show some of their personality in their personal feeds. At MOST you could say this joke is edgy, anything more is hypersensitivity and sensationalizing from the mediots.

And while I'm on the topic, they complain about how hard it is to get any life or interesting answers out of Bill or the gang for questions, yet when anyone tries to have some fun with them (like Welker after the game) they make a ridiculous amount of noise about it and then wonder why they get snubbed the following week.

I feel bad for these guys.
*Remembers they're likely taking baths in their money right now to cool down from practice.*
Ok, maybe not. :D

What Spikes said was, in effect, "I have an urge to discriminate but I don't follow through." Too often, that kind of thing is a code phrase for "I actually do discriminate."

So it would be appropriate for him to prove that he really doesn't.

It takes a lot of "work" come to that conclusion. NO WAY does it convey ANYTHING about discrimination. It was hilarious - and in NO WAY does he have to prove he does not discriminate. This is easily the dumbest conclusion I have read today.

What would the proof be? Taking a bath with a bunch of homosexual men? What's the discrimination? That he doesn't invite homosexuals or spiders into his tub?

Spikes said nothing of the sort, in effect or otherwise.

What you just said in effect was "I can read a persons mind and judge him based on my own set of rules." Too often that kind of thing is a code phrase for "I actually do discriminate."

that's a hilarious tweet

but it makes me wonder why he'd want to draw attention to himself in what he knows would stir up controversy after recent athletes getting in trouble with slurs....

Sad, the 1st Amendment does not apply to the NFL - we already know Goodell is a tyrant so Brandon's fate is up in the air. I actually thought the tweet was funny - not hate at all.

you have to be an idiot to think the first amendment appiles to anything in which you yourself signed a terms of service agreement to

remember when you signed up for this forum? did you read the fine print?

same as the mother ****** nfl homie

they can kill your account if they deem you've violated their rules

learn how the game is played!

It is a matter of PRIVATE PROPERTY - so I understand that when I come to a private company's/individual's place of business rules are part of the AGREEMENT between myself and the business. It is the same reason my company forbids me from bringing a gun onto their property despite my having a concealed/carry license. If Spikes tweeted this from the locker room, practice field, or sideline then YES he is in workplace violation (league sanctions). This does not stand if he did it from home - where he is a private citizen. The team can hold him accountable, but not the league.

Why the sudden mass reaction? He made a childish, ignorant joke that was in slightly poor taste. Let's go ahead and lump this in with plethora of childish, ignorant jokes in poor taste he has tweeted in the past (usually directed at women). Why are his rude tweets suddenly a huge deal?

The joke was in poor taste but the way the media is treating this, you'd think he had authored a hate speech of epic proportions. The radio cannot shut up about it.
