If we return to the 3-4 defense next year, yes, I would take him at #31 because in the BB soft zone defense, it is all about reading routes, communicating and getting to the recevier as the ball gets there. He excels at all that and tackling.

If we stay in the 4-3 and play man, then I would want a faster DB, since Baron would duplicate what Chung brings to the table.

The Pats were playing a majority of 3-4 in the 2nd half of the season. Why would they go back to the 4-3?

The problem is that we don't know why Goldson didn't sign with the pats last year. Was it because he didn't like the Pats? Was it because the Pats didn't like him? Was it because he wanted too much money? We just don't know. And that says that pinning our hopes on signing Goldson is a path to heartbreak because the likelihood is that he's not going to sign with the Pats this year, either.

It doesn't have to be something negative. Perhaps he gave SF a chance to match and they did. If I was the GM I'd make him an offer he couldn't refuse (or at least one SF couldn't match.)

I'm not sure why everybody thinks he's good. Last I saw him, he was taking away two interceptions from his teammates, costing his team a spot in the Super Bowl. Absolutely no situational awareness or on-field discipline in the biggest game of the season.

Those 2 near-INTs were bang-bang plays, in which the first instinct by the Safety is always to go for the hit or pick instead of ass-uming the CB is going to do the job, if he even sees the CB at all. Otherwise, the result could very well be alligator-arming the opponent a big gain (see: Chung, Patrick v. Ballard, Jake).

The bottom line: Goldson would have been our best Safety last season as soon as he put on the Flying Elvis, and Bill was short-sighted (surprise) to allow him to leave Foxborough without signing on the line that is dotted. That decision was even more foolish after Stomper & Sanders were released.

Lol lets see your in game reflexes. The collisions in the NFC title game were split second decisions. How much more of an ass does he look like if he doesn't go for the ball? Goldson is a pimp.

What kind of reflexes are required when twice taking out a teammate who was in the process of making an interception -- one of which had the ball secured. The first one looked like he wanted the interception for himself, and the second like he was going for a big hit.

I didn't watch the 49ers all season long, and I'm not going to say that the guy can't play. I will say he's over-rated as the best free agent in a terrible free agent DB class last year, and that in the biggest game of the season, he showed a terrible lack of discipline.

Captain Stone, yee of magnificent wisdom, please become an NFL GM, please as you can evidently do a better job than a guy who has made 45% of the Super Bowls possible since he has been in New England.

As I have written before, we have no idea why Goldson did not sign a deal with the Patriots last year. It might have been the offer came in low, it might have been that he looked at the film and the scheme that the Patriots play and figured out it was not a good fit, it might have been because he got a bad vibe from the organizational culture, it might have been his wife did not like the housing possibilities. It could have been anything. We don't know what offer was on the table, nor do you, and more importantly, we don't know what would have been needed to get Goldson to sign.

I know I have turned down financially better job offers due to external factors, so even if the Pats came in with an offer 10% or 25% better than teh 49ers, there would have been a chance that Goldson would have turned them done still.

So we should ignore that he was a top 5 FS this season because he almost picked off Manning twice? If you want your ball hawking FS to take his eyes off the ball to make sure he won't run into the corner or receiver, well then that says more about you, that it does about Goldson.

Asinine comments like this make no sense. As mentioned, Goldson could have given San Fran the right of First refusal. There is no accounting for it.

And there is no guarantee that Goldson would have been the best safety. As someone else mentioned, Goldson was responsible for knocking away 2 sure interceptions from his own teammates because of his free-lancing in the NFC Championship game.

Bottom line is that you have no clue how Goldson would have performed on this team so your negativity towards Belichick is completely unfounded. As per usual..

Goldson didn't "ALMOST" pick off Manning twice. That's the problem. He slammed into his teammates while FREELANCING, costing his teammates the interceptions. Helps if you'd have watched the game..

I tend to call freelancing being out of position. I wouldn't say he was out of position. Sometimes things like that happen. He's had a great year and we wanted him to start...we should take a look again.

I was at the game, but cool story.

So you were at the game.. Doesn't mean you had the benefit of watching the replays and seeing how Goldson was out of position and cost his team 2 interceptions.

How exactly is someone out of position and manages to get their mits on an interception?

They have replays at the game, and I saw the game caps on ESPN several times.

Either way you're missing the point. Even if you were right, you can't discount everything he has done this year based on two plays.

Shush, just say he's right or you're labelled a clown, idiot or some other form of nasty word :p

Goldson is ridiculously overrated. Not bad, but not nearly the contract people here would give him.

If he wasn't out of position, why was he coming in LATE and the result was that he knocked the ball away from his own teammmate twice?

People are so quick to talk about situational awareness and then ignore it when it suits them..

Who is discounting everything he did in the year? It would seem to me that those two plays would require more in depth review of the year to see if Goldson was playing to scheme or if he was freelancing to try and earn himself a bigger contract.

From what I saw, it was more the latter than the former. And I did watch 3 other 49er games this year.

Exactly. When exactly did he become a "top 5 FS"? Many people thought he was the best available in free agency last year. Maybe he was, but that has more to do with the rest of the free agency class than anything else. He is a starting caliber safety, nothing more.

Don't get me wrong, we could have used a starting caliber safety last year, but not at any figure.
