Raiders get Gabriel back (merged)

Does the word waivers mean anything about the process except that the player has been dropped and is eligible? Whenever things like this come up and I'm unsure of all the details I try and research it. But, with waivers all I really get is how players are dropped/added from the waiver wire. I guess what i really want to know is, is any player that is dropped automatically on "waivers"? Does it have to happen during the season? Is the team that put a player on waivers still obligated to paying out their contract? If yes, then why bother dropping them?

Players cut during the season are placed on "waivers" meaning any other club can pick up that player and his current contract. Any team can put in a waiver claim, however the player is awarded to the team with the worst record that put in a claim (that is how the Raiders got him). I don't know what is left on Gabriel's contract, but since NFL contracts are not gaurenteed, all they have to do is pay him for the final three games or 3/16th of his salary for this year, and then just release him after the season. Being as most players in the NFL are cut in salary cap moves, they are rarely claimed off waivers.

In contrast in baseball, where the contracts are guarenteed, when someone is placed on waivers, the team that claims him only has to pay him the major league minimum salary, and his old club has to pick the rest.

Re: Gabriel signed by OAK

shame on you. naughty naughty. there, you happy? or i could go ahead and hijack this thread with making the points that it is not gabriel's fault. we didnt run enough inside slants or crossing patterns and JM stinks and needs to be replaced.
Hi Jack! :rocker:

Who me? I learned for the best, ummm or the worst.
Worst! That explains a recent "look at me" thread you did battle with...and I thought a certain Muppets' character had started her new career as a "journalist."

Re: Raiders get Gabriel back

It's more damaging that we lost the fifth, in my opinion. Koppen, O'Callaghan... both fifth rounders.

But then, PK Sam and Mincey were too. So I should cheer up.

Hakim Akbar, Dave Stachelski, and Jeff Marriott were fifth rounders too. We had seven fifth round picks in the Belichick era. Koppen and O'Callahan are the only ones who panned out. It is a better than decent chance that player we would have picked with the fifth round pick would have done less for this team than Gariel did.
