Dashon Goldson visiting Pats today (7th August)

It doesn't prove he was talking about the Patriots but I'm certain he's talking about a free agent visit. The guy he replied to had asked where he was looking at right now. Goldson had already answered his question about drug tests.

Ah, ok, one of those tweets didn't show up in my reader before. How dare their free technology be imperfect! :enranged:

Goldson was really good in 2009. Had a bad year last year. He can be a very good player. He's rangy and a big hitter.

i don't see it as being a significant downgrade at FS if Goldson plays within the system. Just like I don't see it as a significant downgrade to go from Meriweather to Sanders.

Upon further reflection, I'm coming around to your position. I'd rather have the elite talent at DE... the fact that Meriweather still hasn't learned how to tackle pisses me off.

I think Goldson's an improvement over Sanders at this point in Sanders' career. I wouldn't want him coming in and replacing Meriweather on such short notice.

Well, if this is the Patriots involved, and this was supposed to be confidential, Goldson has blown that with his tweets. That'll please the front office.

Tackling is the tip of the iceberg IMO.

Intelligence, maturity and assignment/positional discipline are all lacking as our starting FS.

 He hasn't said one word about the Patriots on Twitter.

When you tweet about having to take a physical, and you tweet about having to keep something confidential, you're not keeping it confidential.

Is he any good ? Never really seen him play.

:yeeha::yeeha::yeeha:
.......
couldn't resist

Are we really going to be better off with a player (Goldson) relacing a player who knows this defense inside and out, 5 days before our first preseason game? He doesn't play the ball as well as Merriweather, if his lack of ints tell the story (5 in his 4 year career - 1 last year). I am just asking the question if a safety coming in a learning a new defense will make us better this year? I don't know enough about the guy, but I'm not as down on Merriweather as many of you.

Meriweather has done little to show me he knows this defense inside out.

Personally I think Goldson is viewed (if he signs) as a rotational safety to replace Jarrad Page and push the other safeties for playing time.

Reiss just posted that it looks like McGowan is going to be released.

It was Goldson's first year calling the defensive signals, and it's difficult to say if that might have affected his comfort level. He was playing with several injuries, too. Goldson's output dropped ... in 2010 ... He was not involved in many key plays throughout the season. Yet, in speaking with the coaches, Goldson got high marks for fulfilling his defensive assignments and keeping the ball in front of him. Still, it was a disappointing season because he did not make the kind of impact one would've expected from him in his second season as a starter. He is unsigned for 2011, but -- depending on the new CBA -- might be a restricted free agent as a four-year veteran.

Sounds like a classic case of buying low.

Somehow, the Patriots won Super Bowl 38 doing it far more extremely the week before the season opener. Doing it a week before the PRE-season opener isn't such a concern.

Now, some might say "Goldson is no Harrison", but I would say "Meriwether is no Milloy".

#31 still doesn't get it mentally and his value will never be so high as now after his miraculous/curious Pro-Bowl selection. Add to that there is no way the Pats will have him after this year anyhow - - his ego has exploded now that he is a "Bowler" and his agent will be demanding a figure BB will never meet.

Addition by subtraction.

As much as I have defended Meriweather, I think 2008 was his peak and he has regressed since then. It's a shame, he'll show these incredible flashes where he looks like he's finally arrived and then he'll have some blown play or get dragged into the endzone (Braylon Edwards).

Unless something clicks into place, and quickly; we might be seeing him on the bench by the middle of the season and Sergio Brown or James Sanders stepping in permanently for him.
