BSMW's "Who Ordered The Jets Sideline Wall?"

Yes and no. How much does a strength and conditioning coach make? $100k, $200k? $25k is a pretty good portion of whatever he is making. Plus; does he lose a pro-rated portion of his salary the way players are suspended do?

On the other hand I agree it would be very easy to kick money back to him. If somebody else ordered and organized those guys to form that wall, they surely want to Alosi happy and in their good graces, and keep him from speaking up.

Big Christmas bonus coming his way this year. This is a 100% cover up. There were 6 of them standing man to man with orders to "get in the way"

Yeah, Goodell's going to do something all right - he'll change the rules to prevent the Gunner from running out of bounds at all and fine the Dolphins player for doing it. The Jets will receive a commendation from the league for bringing this gross infringement of the spirit and intent of the rules to his attention.

Just like he did with their sexual harassment this year and with Farve, and just like he did when they held illegal practices this year. Just like he did when they admitted to filming the Patriots a few years ago but said the Patriots said it was ok even though the patriots denied this. Oh yea, they might lose a 7th rounder if they pull off a contract hit.

Bump. Please get this stream of thought in the national media. Someone?

But let's not take any draft choices away from them; that's like taking a gun from a child. It's the second most productive method they have for creating dead cap space, following only the signing of old vets to contracts they'll finish off on IR.

This is it

They have 6 men here to get in the way. You can see Rex 6 feet away and slightly behind. Is he looking at the ball which was kicked to the other end of the field? No he is watching his guys about to take out the Miami player out of bounds.

Who knows? If it is true the Jets are handling the punishment, there is no way to verify that this guy will be impacted in any way. What prevents the Jets from collecting $25K and then giving him a $25K Christmas bonus in a couple of weeks. Or they could just do nothing and say they did. There are no salary reporting or cap situations so the Jets just drop this guy $100K for a job well done and keeping his mouth shut.

Why don't all teams get to handle their own punishment? Besides the obvious Pats example, what about all the teams that were caught tampering? Because that would be stupid and stink of favoritism and cover-up.

It isn't the crime that gets you...its the cover-up. There were 6 guys in a line where they weren't supposed to be...obviously with an agenda. Check the video, they were right next to Rex. If you were in the middle of a huge game and there was a chorus line of strength coaches, practice squad players, turf specialists and web admins next to you, you don't think you would notice and ask WTF they were doing?

If Rex had come out and said that he lined up those guys to "discourage" the Fins from running out of bounds (which is a penalty) and this bozo went too far, Rex gets a reprimand, it is called gamesmanship and the story dies except as a "Spygate" comeback...and who really cares about that?

Now Rex and the Jets organization are on record as having no knowledge of what was going on. They are lying and people always lie for a reason. The facts of this story will drip out over the next couple of weeks and be a lead weight around their necks. Just what you want as you head out on a 2 game road trip against division leaders, going without a TD for 10 quarters and counting, facing the possibility that your 9-2 team may now need tiebreakers to make the playoffs and your SOV is .383 and only getting worse.

Happy Holidays, Rex.

As heard on the Dale and Holly show today: Thighgate!

The fact that every one of them was still right on the line, that not one of them took even half a step backwards with the Dolphin's gunner racing up the sideline makes me think that this most likely was a planned tactic by the Jets. Of course unless somebody talks we will never know who organized that sideline wall. But it goes against basic human instinct to stay in the path of a player in pads running full speed right towards you. One guy I can see, but every one of them not moving, staying as close as they are allowed to?

Hold.....Hold.....Hold.......Hold

see this photo. Rex watches it all the way and never looks at the ball

Yep, think back to the original "(fill in the blank)-Gate": Watergate. It wasn't the original crime - the break-in - that did Nixon in; it was cover up and the lies about any knowledge of anything that occurred. Interesting parallels here.

Goodell may be in a tough position here. As a Jet fan he'll want to sweep this under the rug and not even comment on it. But with the CBA negotiations going on, if he does nothing the NFLPA could use this against him in the court of public opinion, pointing out how he has a double standard for players and non-players, and his talk of concern about player safety and integrity of the game is BS.

As we say in the music industry; Payola, whats that? Oh here's a $5,000 visa gift card someone gave me, but I dont want it. You can have it. By the way, here's a cd of a new artist that i'm sure you'll want to put into your rotation

Chris Mortensen reported the league is looking into the incident to determine if Alosi and the Jets' inactive players were instructed to station themselves on the extreme edges of the sideline to inhibit Carroll from using that area to cover a punt.

Jets deliver strong statement on Sal Alosi - AFC East Blog - ESPN

Rex set this up and watched it happen from 6 feet away. He never watched the play, just this.

Had to be Rex the ring kissing fata$$.

Now, I hate the Jets as much as the next guy, but I think we all know that the media loves to play fast and loose with the rules.

There is no doubt that the knee was unsportsmanlike and a penalty. But is there any problem with the wall?

Looking at the pictures, there's no doubt that it was intentional. And I think you could make the argument that it's unsporting. But that's a far different thing from saying it violates a rule. Does it? It seems to me that's trying to get as close as possible to the line of the rule without breaking it. These guys are all within the 32 yard line and behind the six-foot white border.

If it doesn't violate the rules, what's the problem with it? I'd argue that the intent of the rule is that six foot white zone belongs to the player. Any further and he takes his chance that there will be a sideline person there. But I don't see a problem with taking full advantage of the rules to gain any advantage you can. Now, if there's a rule somewhere else in the rulebook that says it's improper for sideline personnel to deliberately position themselves, even within the 32 yard line and behind the white border, to gain an advantage, that's a different story. But so far, the only rule I've seen quoted is this one:

"Rule 13, Article 5 Coaches and other non-participating team personnel (including uniformed players not in the game at the time) are prohibited from moving laterally along the sidelines any further than the points that are 18 yards from the middle of the bench area (i.e., 32-yard lines to left and right of bench areas when benches are placed on opposite sides of the field). Lateral movement within the bench area must be behind the solid six-foot white border."

I would read that rule to say that if a coach wants to line up his entire team along the white border inside the 32 yard lines to keep a coverage player from gaining more than his permitted 6 foot safety zone, he has every right to do it, albeit he should be potentially be criticized for unsporting behavior.

But I don't see where it violates a rule, and if the commissioner's office is really looking into it, it's the same old crap in a different package that Patriots fans are all too used to. I'm not going to get excited just because it's our hated rivals. As for going all Zapruter on what Rex might have seen, have at it. It's entertaining. But again, I'm not really aware of any requirement that chubby has to tell the media the truth about his strategy decisions. If he lies to the league, that's a different story.

Edit: I should add, though, that I guess the fact that a wall was ordered makes the trip somewhat more in context and does become more of a team or head coach responsibility instead of the actions of one misguided guy, so I suppose it is interesting from that perspective. Still, I don't have a problem with the wall itself. Assuming, as I am, that it doesn't violate a rule, I actually kind of respect it.

Edit2: So it looks as though this is being discussed ad naseum in the other thread. And here I thought I had an original thought . . .

I agree. When running out of bounds a player should launch and lead with his helmet to defend himself from the guys in wind breakers on the Jets. I hope for many Steeler induced injuries to Jet assistants.:)

What a crock that Graham column is.

As shameful as Alosi's trip of Miami Dolphins gunner Nolan Carroll was, the Jets at least should be proud of how they responded. The Jets suspended Alosi without pay for the rest of the season, including the playoffs, and fined him $25,000. Alosi will not be allowed to have any contact with the players while he is suspended.

Hope "thighgate" has legs for the next two years, hope the rumours keep coming.. the azzclowns of New Jersey deserve all of this negative attention ++++++++..

The only fair punishment would be a 500k fine and a 1st rounder if the jets make the playoffs, or a 3rd rounder if they don't.

The precedent is now set. Teams can now do the following:

1) Hire a guy off the street as a "coach".
2) Pay him $30K.
3) Put him on the sidelines during a big game.
4) Remind him how extremely disappointed you would be if anything happened to the opposing gunner on a punt. Really disappointed.
5) Block the gunner out of bounds.
6) "Coach" mauls the gunner, allowing your team to get a big return.
7) The league lets you punish the guy.
8) Fine the "coach" $25K and let him go.
9) Make a statement about how extremely disappointed you are in his behavior. Really disappointed.
10) Everybody happy
