Which BIG NAMES don't make the cut???

Re: Which BIG NAMES dont make the cut???

There will definitely be some surprises from the LB group. Crable, Alexander, McKenzie are all possibilities.

I'd be mildly surprised if McKenzie got cut. I'd be mildly to moderately surprised if Crable or Alexander don't get cut.

Re: Which BIG NAMES dont make the cut???

Mark me down for Ron Brace.

BB already showed that without Pioli he is willing to quickly cut bait on non-performing sunk costs . He did the same thing with KOC, albeit he was a second-year third-rounder, not a second-year second-rounder.

In this scenario, I think Lewis & GWarren both stick as vets, the latter starting. And I think that Brandon Deaderick makes the 53 and there just ends up not being enough room on the roster to keep Brace.

Granted, this is all based on nothing but a hunch, but you wanted a surprise cut, there's a surprise cut.

They'll cut Tate before they cut Brace. They're both 2nd year players who did not put in much performance last season (although Tate did not due to injury). They're both supposedly making big jumps in the offseason.

Now, of course I don't believe either of them have any reasonable chance of being cut. I'm just saying that it doesn't make sense to cut a player drafted in an early round just because they didn't get to perform much in their rookie season (Tate due to injury; Brace due to other starters).

Gerard Warren.

Crable and Alexander are possibilities; McKenzie is about 99% sure of making the roster.

Gerard Warren.
Warren may indeed not make the roster, but does he really qualify as a "Big Name that doesn't make the cut"? I mean, we're talking about a guy signed to a one-year contract with a signing bonus of just $40,000. I see him as someone that's on the bubble, with a 50-50 chance of making the team; no shock if he's cut.

Re: Which BIG NAMES dont make the cut???

Ron Brace is our backup nose tackle. When he played, he did OK. Who else do you think is ahead of Brace in the depth chart at NT? Who would you want to start if Wilfork is injured. Brace did NOT have an unusual year for a rookie defensive lineman. He is a top pick who played OK and has no one ahead of him at his position.

Re: Which BIG NAMES dont make the cut???

The most suprising for me in recent memory was cutting Victor Hobson
Are you joking? Out of all the surprise cuts you pick him? I barely even remember that it was so insignificant.

Re: Which BIG NAMES dont make the cut???

And who runs the football in week 3 when Maroney breaks (insert bone here)? Morris, Taylor and Maroney combine to play 16 games, unless a legitimate RB comes in between now and the start of the season both make the team.

Maroney was healthy all season. Since you didn't actually bother to pay attention. Morris and Taylor were the ones who missed time to injury.

Re: Which BIG NAMES dont make the cut???

The first part of the season he didn't do much though. 10 carries in the first game for 32 yards and then an average of 5.5 carries and 16.75 yards through the next 4 weeks. He may as well have been injured...

I know he shared carries (although he could've won the job outright with better performances) Maroney actually only had one 100 yard game, the throttling of the Titans. I wish I could make him my surprise cut, but I know it won't happen.

You're probably right, but the straight-to-IR-from-training-camp story for McKenzie just has me thinking about Ryan Claridge in '05, whom we also had high hopes for.

Yeah, but McKenzie was a third round pick; Claridge was a fifth. The only Pats draft choice that have not lasted to the opening day of their second year after they were drafted that high in the last ten years were Kevin O'Connell - which was a very odd draft choice right from the beginning - and Brock 'pawn my ring' Williams from the 2001 draft, after multiple injuries. Even Guss Scott lasted two years.

On the other hand with no cap implications, if a team is going to cut its losses early this would be the season to do it. If a cap was still in place JaMarcus Russell would still have a job. However, from everything I've been reading McKenzie looks very good, so I don't expect him to be cut.

Funny thing about the ILB position is that there are two players with just two years experience each that have combined for just 46 starts, and two players with zero NFL experience, yet I'm not concerned with the position at all - especially in comparison to some of the other positions.

Crable may well get cut. BB may think that he's likely to survive the cull and end up on the pratice squad after clearing waivers.

Be suprised to see Tate get cut. Think he looks a good if not great WR. He'd be picked up by teams looking for a WR3.

Surely that is the point of a surprise cut? ;)

I'm pretty sure that Alexander will get cut. What does he contribute over 52 others ???

Supposed good ST play. I think Crable has a better chance of a roster spot, if he can stay healthy of course :)

Re: Which BIG NAMES dont make the cut???

Not big names. but with the 2nd year of BB's youth movement, traditional Pats ST only members of the 53 may be more at risk of unemployment this year than previously. A rook who can play STs has only to show potential at a regular position and he's a threat to the ST only crowd.

Re: Which BIG NAMES dont make the cut???

This has been posted every year since the boards began.

As mentioned, ST play. This board really needs to pull the throttle back on the Crable hype. He's continuously injured and whenever he has actually been able to suit up he looks atrocious. Just because he has 3-4 OLB potential (minus 10-15 pounds) doesn't mean he's any good.
