Could Light get cut or traded?

Re: Light cut or traded?

The article says 'don't rule out Matt Light getting cut', but i'm afraid thats exactly what i'm going to do.

Matt Light will not get cut this year - no way.

No chance he gets cut.

Traded. Possibly.

But only if the value in the trade is way too good to be true.

Re: Light cut or traded?

Vollmer is already a starter - at RT.

Light's not getting cut.

Re: Light cut or traded?

The one thing the Pats line stresses is continuity. The 2 big problems I see on the OL are finding a place for Vollmer and replacing Mankins when he leaves for FA next year. Light has been a favorite here and his career is getting on the back 40 as they say. I say try and kill 3 birds with one stone by trading Mankins(who will demand more in compinsation), restructuring Light's contract with an extension, and converting him to LG. I think this solidifies our OL for the long run. Its a deep draft and if we can get a 2nd rd pick for Mankins we can use it to get another younger, cheaper, hungrier player. Any team trading for Mankins can justify it because they will certainly get a 3rd rd comp pick even if he doesnt sign a long term deal! Light can backup LT, and Ornberger(our 4th rd pick we essentially traded Hobbs for)can back up LG. OL is by far the deepest unit on the team.

Light won't get cut and his trade value would be low

If any lineman is going to be cut or traded, its Kaczur

Given that it's an uncapped year, I agree Light is very unlikely to be cut.

Also, the fact that Vollmer filled in for both starters at various times last season is a reminder that it's good to have more than two starting-quality tackles.

This isn't the worst idea I've read on this board. But trading your pro bowl lineman when you are ostensibly going for a championship with Brady/BB is a bit antithetical.

I guess the real question is assessing Mankins true short term value vs. realistic draft replacements.

That's putting the cart before the horse don't you think? I think they will focus on Mankins more after the draft IMO. I'm not worried.

I'll chime in with a 'no way' as well. Nice effort at thinking outside the box I guess, but he's insane to think that the Pats, finally finding some quality depth on the O-line last year, would turn around and just piss it away.

Vollmer is not ready to start at LT. He had a lot of TE help last year and this year they'll have new TEs. Light is easily here for another season as starting LT.

OL is the deepest unit on the team, you agree? Vollmer is a stud in waiting, Light cant play RT, Kazcur just signed a extension and Mankins is not playing along until it affects his money, right? To me the solution is simple, you maximize value and talent. What is more valuable Mankins for 2010 and a comp 3rd rd pick in 2012 or getting Vollmer on the field this season AND getting a 2nd rd pick in the deepest draft in decades while ridding yourself a malcontent? Mankins' value will max out during the draft when teams are on the clock. I really dont see depth as a problem as we got Ornberger last draft and we will likely take a late round guy again this year. Interior linemen dont cause you to go down by 24 points in a playoff game, not once, ever.

nope, light aint going anywhere

hes our LT, and neither is kazcur...hes too cheap

i also want vollmer to start, but at RG

I wouldn't say it's thinking outside the box. Last year, BB traded Hobbs. Who was the other CB, after Hobbs was traded?
Maybe there is a team out there eyeing Light, and what would they spend to get him?

Little article on Pro Football Weekly speculating on Light's future with Pats.

ProFootballWeekly.com - Patriots' Vollmer figures to start, but where?

Light is one of my favorite Pats but this years crop of kids might be tempting if you can get a second rounder from LT needy Teams. I am in the Camp of Trade. Cut, no I don't think that would be smart. Can't see that.
Why trade him? Last year of the contract and he is out of here. You resigned Kcazur. You resigned Neal and he keeps producing even if injury prone. Volmer is your future. Think Seymour last year as an example. Not necessarily the same but close.

Protecting Brady is the most important thing on offense. Matt Light has always done his job and there is no sane reason to think that he will be going anywhere.

what part of Matt Light is not a dominate run blocker do you not comprehend?

Unless they draft Iupati or Pouncey.

Puts the Pats in pole position in the negotiations. Both above can play Center or Guard.
