Thoughts and notes on today's game

I have to say, I've been a pretty outspoken supporter of the defense, and was pretty pleased today, but I remain a bit wary, despite the stats. Just from what I'm seeing - which, obviously, was much more impressive as the game went on - I still am not sure I'd come close to calling this defense "dominant" or even approaching dominant. Still need convincing, especially with such a piss-poor pass-rush.

I agree with a lot of that. I also agree that it is far too early to consider it a dominant defense. What I was trying to articulate is that the pieces are there for it to become one as the unit develops and becomes healthy again.

What's your argument for that?

I've had this argument/discussion every week since he got here. I don't like him. Poor tackling. Loose coverage. Bad hands.

The guy couldn't find a job for a reason. He's not solid yet. That being said, he hasn't given up the huge plays yet (like others before him), but he also hasn't been on the other side of the spectrum and making the big plays.

I loved asante because he was a game-changer. end of story he got it done. everyone loves bodden right now because of what? i don't see it.

maybe you could tell me?

Please explain your thinking on this.

Well I mean - he covered Jenkins today, who coincidentally led the falcons in receiving. He doesn't get the job done yet.

I'll agree with everyone that he's an upgrade from Hobbs/O'Neal, but who wouldn't be?

I'd much prefer and feel a lot more comfortable with Springs-Wilhite-Butler-Bodden-Wheatley depth chart.

Shirley, you can't be serious?

I'm very serious. Why wouldn't I be? There is no evidence to the contrary.

Just because he lifted one guy up off his feet today in the open field doesn't make him good. Much left to prove from my end

So you are looking at when Jenkins lined up at Flanker and the coverage was man? Even that wouldn't yield the logic. Jenkins made the majority of his plays when he was running posts and inside stuff against zone coverage. This means that Bodden didn't have him as responsibility on his largest plays. The one big play Jenkins made on Bodden was when he pushed off. Jenkins pushed off because Bodden was on him like white on rice on a paper plate in a snow storm.

Towards the loose coverage...have you seen the balls thrown in his direction? You know, the ones that are broken up because the coverage is so damn tight? What about the gorgeous form tackle he executed today on the hitch? How he drove hard as hell on the ball out of his soft coverage assignment? Suddenly he can't tackle? He's the best tackling corner on the bloody football team! A top 5 in the league at that.

Honestly, is this a troll or are you being serious?

Mr. Bauer, weren't we on the same page last week? what happened? one week changed you're mind?

Your memory is deceiving you. I was arguing with you in favor of Bodden last week. Your criticisms are entirely undeserved and without merit.

you'll never get off the practice squad, with posts like this.

I think TB's shoulder is bothering him not his knee. I thought he looked pretty good on the short and intermidiate passes, and he will get the long bomb back sood. This is an overall improvement over the last two weeks.

The offense will come together soon, ringht now its inconsistant. The running game looked good but stopping the run is not supposse to be Atlanta's srong suit.

I'm no longer worried about the Defense it now threee weeks in a row that they've held an opponinte to under 20 pt's imo thats no longer a fluke.

I've seen theis picture before i.e. rough start early then the team stabalizes and goes on a long winning streak whcih i think is going to happen.

please explain. also, please explain you're undying loyalty to the credibility to the pats fans nickname system.

far from a troll my friend. and top 5 tackling corner in the league?????? WHAT?

need i say more? that's ridiculous. as for your "zone" argument...well that just wasnt the case today. two of his largest gains came on an out-route and a button hook...both that should've been covered by the CORNER...bodden

I'll try to decipher what your asking..............you mean your designation as practice squad?(limited amount of posts).................My designation was sarcasm.....ergo,if you have Bodden 5th on your depth chart, you'll never rise above the practice squad.

I just found out we traded a 3 and 5 round pick for this guy derrick BURGESS has any one seen him on the field i heard he has been active the past 3 weeks . LOL / from Mike Reiss Burgess the Defensive end doesn't register on the stat sheet as the pass rush doesn't get there with the standard four-man rush.

I think I'm in the same boat as you. While I do remain optimistic about the defense and think they are performing admirably without Mayo, I think there's a slight overreaction to their performance. They were looking pretty bad on the first few drives of the game and the 3rd good drive stalled from a fumble by Turner. Yeah, credit to McGowan for the force but at that moment our defense appeared to be in big trouble. More trouble on Atlanta's 3rd quarter drive thwarted by a few penalties and luckily for us they did not attempt 4th and 5 after a good gain on 3rd and 18 (caused by those penalties). Atlanta's offense was only on the field for 20 minutes as well so I give our offense alot of credit for today, despite the RZ failures.

Great job on the original post of the thread, good read. But like others have said it's hard to see Bodden back here, if his season continues the man is going to get paid next year. We have Springs, Wilhite, and Butler here multiyear so I don't see us getting into the bidding but you never know. My only question is why did we wait so long to stock up on CB's when we knew Asante was gone after '07. Still can't believe we entered '08 with just Hobbs, Deltha, and the rooks.

I'll give you Antione Winfield. Now give me four better.

NFL Videos: Patriots 26, Falcons 10

Jenkins plays:
@1:19 15 yard completion on a post against Bodden in 2 man-under. That should be a completion every time on that route vs that coverage. Because of the coverage on top, the corner is mandated to retain outside technique on the receiver. This is why a big bodied receiver will always win this matchup.
@1:33 27 yard completion on a seam against your boy Springs. Bodden was all over his assignment, #84.

Not to burst your bubble dude, but you are completely, without argument wrong in your view of Bodden. Still looking for a clip of an out, and a "button-hook" whatever the **** that route is.

People tend to wax hot or cold, black or white. Many predicted that our offense would have to carry us this season and that we would have to win 38-35 shootouts. Well, that obviously wasn't the case. Now some are proclaiming that we have a "dominant" and "top 5" defense.

It's too early to tell. I've always been optimistic about our defense this year, feeling that we finally had the kind of speed and athleticism that I've been hoping to see. But we're very young, and thin at LB.

Statistically we may be a top 5 defense through 3 games. We're certainly much better than expected, especially with the injury to Mayo and the Seymour trade. But we're not dominant at this point, with little effective pass rush. I don't see that changing dramatically, unless Derrick Burgess wakes up and finds his 2005-2006 form. Not likely at this point.

Could we become dominant this year? Conceivably. I personally doubt it, though I think we will be a top 10 and possibly top 5, SB caliber defense. I do think that if we keep our basic defensive unit intact (including Wilfork and Bodden) and address the LB and pass rushing situation for 2010 as aggressively as we did the secondary this past offseason that we have a good chance of putting together a dominant defense next year.
