There's quite a bit of it, actually.

It's actually what the art form started as. I always thought it was one of the finer forms of modern verbal expression. Immortal Technique, Slug, Common, even some Kanye...

I used to listen The Point of No Return before games.

By the way.

YouTube - The Roots - The Next Movement - LIVE

They're quite accomplished musicians. And that's just one example.

Moron.

I eagerly await The Roots appearence on Yo Gabba Gabba.

1st....Eddie Van Halen - learned to play a guitar by himself, some consider him to be dope.
2nd...you might wanna check out "Outkast" ...Andre 3000 plays many instruments
3rd...check out "The Roots" they are a hip hop band......or teh Brand New Heavies, who are jazz funk and hip hop
4th...DJ-ing, mixing records, and turtablism is an instrument. I work the 1s and 2s, and I'll tell you, its no cakewalk. I too am self taught, took me about 6 years to figure it out.

YouTube - Mixmaster Mike Scratching

YouTube - MIXMASTER MIKE lesson

talk to Mix Master Mike.....tell me that aint playing an instrument.....

DJing is always something I wanted to learn. Any advice to someone looking to start, ie where to buy equiptment and what have you?

Yeah, this is good stuff. Have you heard the new Mos Def record? I've read some good reviews.

Not a huge RAP fan, but it can't be denied. Some of it I actually like, just not the gangsta crap. That stuff sucks.

Yeah, you're an idiot. It's got a beat. You can dance to it. It's as much music as Elvis Presley is.

I'm an idiot. right. I never said rap wasn't music, big guy. I said it was bad music. I could make a rap album tomorrow. I said that Revolution #9 wasn't music.

And, yeah, you can dance to it, but I'd be more likely to slit my wrists to it.

Yeah, I downloaded it last week. The first 30 minutes, he's killin it. Supermagic has one of the sickest samples I have heard. It's alright, nothing too great. His flow is a lot like J-5 for the last 30 minutes of it. Not his finest work, but it is real hip hop.

Get 2 techniqes 1200s.

buy a used pair, they don't break...and its pointless to buy a new set (easily $1,000)

Watch the documenatry "Scratch"...teh DVD actually has some lessons on it by DJ swamp and Q-bert.

Learn to scratch first, then mix, then beat juggle, then build.

Don't expect to learn how to do anything the first night...or 2nd or fifteenth....

enjoy it. Play what you like to hear!

It's bad music? So your taste has leapt across the barrier between opinion and fact to become universal truth? Sweet! I say it's good music. Have fun unwinding what that means, exactly. :ugh:

I haven't, he's next in the list. What's it all about?

Basically, he's a guy who has incredible intelligence. Because of his lack of pigment he was picked on to no end as a kid. Grew up quick, learned to be a man, ect...He's also calmly confident in who he is; true confidence, not rap ****iness. He's got a bit of an edge to him as well, and he is pretty agressive in his flow, while maintaining that laid back confidence. Lyrically, he is unquestionably the best I have ever heard.

I'll have to take a listen at some point.

So many things wrong with this statement . . .

Such as what?

Jim Morrison wasn't a musician, either, but he was a big part of one of my favorite bands. He didn't know the difference between the key of G and the key of C...but at least he sang. There is a difference between singing and rapping. And rappers don't necessary even need a band to back them up. A lot of it is electronic.

To rap, all you need to have is a sense of rhythm, which comes naturally for the most part. How many rappers do you know of that actually studied music? That's the question.

Depends on your definition of studying. Are you talking about Berkley or are you talking about absorbing all that one can in an informal manner?
