Re: Mike Lombardi: Cassel to be franchised

Bad move i like matt brady will be fine we need secondary with that money say no no no
Cassel won't be with the team. We can get the secondary help we all want by trading him.

Re: Report: Pats To Franchise Cassel

Thanks ......

Re: Report: Pats To Franchise Cassel

I really feel much better that John Tommose has said it:rolleyes:

With that being said, I hope its just a case of getting something in return for cassel, or how bout working a short term deal with him for insurance.. Because three needs beside working offseason extentions for Hobbs, wilfork and Mankins..

1 CB
2 Pass rushing lb
3 saftey...

also a depth at wr would be helpful..

John Tomase didn't "say" it. He said that ESPN who said that National Football Post said it.

Re: Report: Pats To Franchise Cassel

working offseason extentions for Hobbs.

Seriously? Extension for Hobbs? Now, I don't doubt that he's a fine CB, but I'm guessing that he thinks too highly of himself and that he'll be wanting WAY more money than he's worth.

If he's looking for #1 CB money I'd let him play out is contract and let him walk. He won't be hard to replace.

I think he is a solid number 2, but who is back there you have faith in right now, Willhite and Wheatly may be promising, but its still a unknown..

And I even feel so much better that Espn has said it:rolleyes2:

But I know lombardi has said so this is where the 2 clowns got it from.. I only hope its for compensation then Brady has some doubt, it would totally suck to lose him another year..

Re: Report: Pats To Franchise Cassel

How about Patriots: We franchised Cassel

Hobbs is a valuable KO returner, but I'd think twice about giving him a contract of anything higher than what nickelbacks get. I've watched this guy get picked on for the past 4 years by opposing QBs and paying him more than what nickelbacks get would be a mistake.

I've been thinking about the reasons that the Patriots would release this information now to the press. Perhaps it is for the following reasons or more likely due to a combination of them.

1. Early discussions with Cassel's agent haven't gone anywhere.

2. The move simply makes too much sense. Brady might not be the same until he gets a few games under his belt. Cassel is too valuable to let go. Good quarterbacks that fit your system take years to develop and are not easily found.

3. Maybe there's still hope that Cassel will be willing to stay with the team and sign a multiyear contract to serve as a Steve Young to Joe Montana. The franchise tag just buys some time.

Interesting to see how this plays out. I fall into the camp that sees somebody offering at least a first rounder for Cassel. Good quarterbacks are worth a lot, and Cassel has turned a lot of heads.

Having seen Tavais Jackson last night I would think the Vikings are a QB away from a decent SB chance. Given they'll have a low first round pick and arent likely to get a decent QB down there, I wonder if they come knocking for Cassel.

I would if I were them

The Vikings are a good head coach away from having a very good team.

Re: Cassel to Be Franchised

If this is true and the Pats are going to tag Matt. I feel that is just to be prepared in case Tom is not ready to go. I for one feel that he will be ready and then the team may trade Matt away. One thing for sure is that I like the fact the team is ready to do what is need to make sure that a good QB is under center.

I think the talk about the franchise tag for MC is a shot across the bow of his agent.

The Pats are saying we both have the power in the negotiations and you should negotiate, in good faith, a longer term more cap friendly contract with a signing bonus that will let MC make as much as being franchised that will allow us to trade MC to a team that needs a starter.

Those are fundamentally incompatible things, since the Patriots would have to eat any signing bonus they pay out if they trade Cassel--and, b/c of the fact that 2010 is currently uncapped, I believe they'd have to take the entire cap hit in 2009.

Yeah, that seems right to me.

I admit that I'm not understanding much of this, but I would have to think that being tagged is a dream come true for Matt Cassel. I would think it will take him all of 2 seconds to sign the tender.

I guess what I don't understand about all this is what leverage the Pats have here? Unless there are multiple bidders for a Cassel trade, at the end of the day, don't teams know that we have to trade him? We can't possibly actually start the year and be competitive with both Brady's and Cassel's salaries taking up cap room, can we? If Brady is not ready, then we have no choice, and the team will do the best we can. But once the team starts trying to trade Cassel, other teams will know that's clearly not the case -- and aren't they in the driver's seat at that point because they know we can't hold him? Obviously, once more than one team gets interested, all bets are off.

If Cassel signs the tender and there is only one team interested in trading for him, then yes, the Pats would be SOL with no leverage; however, that will not be the case. There will be at least 2-3 legitimate trade partners -- maybe more -- for Cassel's services, so the leverage point that every one of these teams knows the Pats can't keep him is rendered impotent.
