Default SBB's 8/18 AM practice and final thoughts

Quick walkthrough with players in shorts and tees. but some interesting stuff going on.

The most interesting was seeing Edelman at QB for a option type play. I was watching the D and could have missed a rep or two but when I turned back to the O Edelman was the QB running an option type play.

The STs was working on some situational stuff. Onside kicks and recoveries and what do if they fake the onside and kick deep. They did a drill on what to do if the snap is bad and the holder scambled yelling fire and the eligible recievers had to get out in route.

well thats it for my camp visits.

Here are some final thoughts.

The secondary should be good this year highlighted by Meriweathers rise to stardom. He IMO is the best DB we have. Bodden has looked good and the rooks and sophmore guys seem to be developing highlighted by Whilhite. Wish I could have seen more of Springs but we know what he is capable of.

Edelman looks good and should he continue to shine he will be getting reps in the regular season. And when you add him to Galloway and Lewis, who have each had there moments and at other times seemed invisible, we should have some nice options to complement the studs in Welker and Moss.

There are tons of options in the front 7 and the mixing and matching should be heavy. Differents looks as far as 4-3, 3-4, and nickle and dime packages but also different skill sets in a lot of the players.

Having Brady back is awsome and seeing his drive and competativeness up close is always fun. Until Walter gets comfortable and shows more I think O'Connell is QB2.

RBs looks to be an awsome group and if they stay healthy they could do some special things as a group.

The O-line has all the same starters and I think they all keep their spots. Having 2 guys in Hochstein and Vollmer that can back up all spots on the line should be a great asset.

Thats it guys. A few weeks until the season starts and Cutdowns and 3 games to occupy the time. And of course this board.

Hochstein may be able to back up all spots on the OL - not that I want him at tackle anytime soon. Vollmer looked much too raw at LT the other night, the potential is there, but I think he needs plenty of development, that and an offseason with Woicik and Nash to help him further develop his quickness/explosiveness and short area foot speed. I don't want Vollmer lining up at G/C anytime soon.

Depending on how quickly Orhnberger develops before the season, Hochstein appears to be in a battle because Wendell is looking pretty good. That said, if BB thinks Orhn can make it to the PSquad, I can see Hoch making the team.

SBB,

As I mentioned in another thread, thanks for doing this posting. I was unhappy to not be able to get to a single practice, but there's always next year!

Thanks again for the informative postings.

Have to wonder if featuring Edelman at the second to last practice at QB was just to make the scouts think about all the possibilities...

They could have waited until tommorrow, when practices are closed...

Wouldn't surprise me. Though I can see them running a reverse with him, no question.

I meant between the two of them, Hochstein can play both guard spots and center and Vollmer can play both tackles. I cant see Vollmer as an interior guy and while I bet Hochstein has worked at tackle I can't actually see him there. I think Vollmer is certainly raw but I don't think we have a better back up tackle and who knows maybe he developes during the season and overtakes Kaczur.

I was thinking the same thing too. Another thought I had on this subject was that they didn't want him working on the gimmicks until they knew he would make it as a WR or STs guy. (Why waste the energy if he wasn't going to make it.)

Vollmer needs to take a huge jump to overtake Kaczur, I won't say it's impossible, but I don't see Dante putting that kind of pressure on him when he has a solid starter. Britt is a serviceable #3 until LeVoir is back healthy, there is also a chance O'Callaghan bounces back from a rough Philly game to press Britt.

EDIT: Hochstein played RT in 2004 in Pittsburgh when they broke the regular season win streak after all the injuries that knocked NE OL out of the game. Love the guy, but he's getting close to the end of his time in NE.
