Day 19, first Patriots practice - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com

Day 19, first Patriots practice
Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots concluded their morning practice (9:30) on the 19th day of training camp and were once again in full pads.

Here are a few observations from the session:

1) Le Kevin Smith takes the field … then is traded off it. Walking in to today’s practice, those in attendance saw Le Kevin Smith in full pads, standing with his teammates, before he was escorted down the stairway to the locker room. At first, it was thought that perhaps Smith was a victim of the heat. It was later learned that he had been traded to the Broncos. It is always interesting to hear/see how trades go down behind the scenes and this was a case where the deal must have been finalized this morning based on Smith’s presence at the start of practice.

2) Not all four-man line. One of the hot topics of camp has been the Patriots’ usage of the four-man line, as they played it almost exclusively in the preseason opener. The Patriots, who have been a base 3-4 defense in recent years, got away from the four-man line at times in this practice.

Another insanely hot day begins with with a trade and some practice…

So… It’s hot. Like, really hot. I feel like I’m back in Alabama. And it’s so intense that reserve DT Le Kevin Smith walked off the field. No, I’m kidding, that wasn’t why…

Let’s look at what’s going on at practice:
– The Patriots began the day with a trade. Smith left practice after a few minutes because he was traded to the Broncos for a fifth-round pick, I’m told. That completes the deal with the Raiders for Derrick Burgess.
– OL Logan Mankins returned to practice a day after suffering from heat-related issues. Rich Ohrnberger, however, did not. But his agent Joe Linta said it was precautionary.

Paul’s Calls: Monday morning notes

Written by Paul Perillo on August 17, 2009 – 2:06 pm -

Day 19 of training camp featured another full pads practice – the 17th time in 24 practices the team has been in full gear. The weather remained oppressive with temperatures soaring into the 90s for the second straight day. That was a big topic following the workout after a couple of players had issues dealing with the conditions on Sunday.

-The team announced a few personnel moves immediately after practice. The most noteworthy was the trading of defensive lineman Le Kevin Smith to Denver. Smith was actually in uniform with his teammates but was escorted back to the locker room just before the start of practice after he’d been traded.

One day after having a pair of players carted off the sweltering practice fields the Patriots returned to work in Foxborough and talked about the extreme temperatures.

...

Who’s Hot: David Thomas. The veteran tight end had a number of nice blocks out of the backfield in the preseason opener Thursday night. Monday he caught a touchdown in red zone work, while also throwing his body around a few more times from the fullback position.
Who’s Not: Tedy Bruschi. No. 54 is admittedly working his way back into camp shape. But he had some confusion working alongside Eric Alexander leading to the pair being out of position at the snap in one rep on Monday.
Play of the Day: Terrence Nunn put on a practice show once again with an all-out diving reception down the left sideline on a ball thrown by Brian Hoyer. Nunn was covered by Leigh Bodden off the line and James Sanders tried to help over the top, but the first-year free agent bounced to a stop on the turf with the ball in his hands, although he may have been out of bounds. Either way, it was a great catch.
