If he is in the final year of his rookie contract, it is my understanding that he is a RFA. Is this right thinking?
This is so wrong on so many levels, it makes my head hurt.

Dwight Freeney signed a 7-year contract in 2002, when he was drafted:
Quote:
1. DE Dwight Freeney (Syracuse/No. 11 overall) -- Signing bonus: $3,000,000. Base salaries: $944,000 (2002); $1,180,000 (2003); $1,416,000 (2004); $1,652,000 (2005); $1,888,000 (2006); $2,124,000 (2007); and $2,360,000 (2008). Notes: Team can exercise option-buyout on 2008 season with $3,000,000 payment next spring. If exercised, base salaries are reduced to $300,000 (2003); $391,000 (2004); $600,000 (2005); and $765,000 (2006). The 2007-2008 seasons are voided with minimal playing time. Total: seven years, $14,564,000, or five years, $9,000,000. Cap value: $1,372,000.
When the 2008 league year is up, he'll be an unrestricted free agent.
The only case where he would be a restricted free agent would be if he was a free agent after the 2004 league year and had been on the roster long enough in 2002-4 to get an accredited season (3 games, I believe, I.R. and PUP included). Obviously, that wasn't the case. Since he now has 4 accredited seasons under his belt, he's an unresticted free agent for life.

Pats1 already did that in the third post of the thread.
For further clarification, there's this page on the NFL's own website, which I found using a simple google search for "nfl free agency":
"Restricted free agents are players who have completed three accrued seasons of service and whose contracts have expired."
Freeny is ineligible for restricted free-agency on two levels - the first and most obvious is that he is still under contract, which you yourself acknowledged in this thread's original post (although you got the length wrong, claiming that he's in the final year of his contract when in reality he has three more years left). How could he be a FREE agent if he is under contract - not free, but bound to a single team?
Secondly, even if Freeny was a free agent, he would be unrestricted, since he has completed more than three accrued seasons in the league. But he won't be a free agent until his contract expires, which is after the 2008 season.
Maybe I just value self-reliancy more than others, but in these days of Google, Wikipedia, and the like, I find it a more rewarding experience to dig up for myself information that I seek, rather than asking others to give it to me.

Oh so ty for the sarcasm. since it was covered in the 3rd post already ty for taking the time and glorifying yourself in making further comment. glad to hear you are self reliant, maybe you don't need this board then. have fun troll.
For any of you kiddies not interesting in sparing with Colt trolls, this article from IndyStar says Freeney is signed through 2006 and the Colts are planning on signing him and/or Mathis to long term deals this season. If they get one done and not the other they will use the tag on the unsigned one.
A potential problem for us (re: any Seymour deal) is the presumption any deal Freeney signs will make him the highest paid defensive player in the league.
"Irsay provides input on personnel matters and signs the checks, but president Bill Polian and coach Tony Dungy collaborate on how best to structure the roster. That requires prioritizing. Most recently, it meant retaining wide receiver Reggie Wayne, defensive ends Raheem Brock and Robert Mathis and linebackers Gary Brackett and Cato June at the expense of James, Thornton, Tripplett and kicker Mike Vanderjagt, who signed with Dallas.
"Reggie and Raheem were the priorities for a lot of reasons -- their position, their age,'' Irsay said.
The next order of business is locking up Mathis and Dwight Freeney, one of the NFL's best pass-rush tandems, on a long-term basis. Each is under contract through the 2006 season. Freeney is in the final year of his rookie contract and will count $6.18 million against the cap, while Mathis signed a one-year, $2.069 million contract as a restricted free agent.
"We're going to keep Mathis and Freeney,'' Irsay said. "And to get those two guys done . . . we had to look at our roster in anticipation of how we're able to conform to the cap and do these things.''
I think it's safe to assume the Colts would know about these things. Obviously the dummy 6th and 7th years in his rookie contract were voided when he met whatever minimum requirements allowed for them to be. Mannings current deal was originally a 9 year $108M deal, but it voided to a 7 year $98M deal after he met certain minimum requirements in the first year of that deal.
NFLPA.com still lists salaries for Freeney for 2007 and 2008 for whatever that means.
you dolts fans are supposed to know this stuff cold. if ya don't, then go play in someone else's sandbox.
if ya do, then just keep going your bogus franchise's games, wave that blue-and-white stufrf that isn't yours, and cheer your squad. this is about as good as it's gonna get for you people.
unless your baseball team wins the world series. oops! well, maybe your NHL franchise will get close to the Stanley Cup. hey! i thought it was Indy with a team, but no, that's....Columbus Ohio!
well anyway, maybe you can get the Columbus franchise in a couple years, or Charlotte. then you could take a shot at the dodgers or somebody.
happy hunting!
