Default Larry Foote could be a free agent

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Foote will be asked to restructure his deal which he will refuse without an extention which is unlikely with Laurence Timmons waiting in the wings. This could prompt his release. I think he could be a really good pick up for the Pats. His production has dropped off a bit this year, but he is 28, well versed in the 3-4, and definitely fits a need at ILB. Granted I question his intelligence since he seems to want to go to Detriot.

From the article:

Foote to Detroit?

The Detroit Free Press quoted a close friend of Larry Foote's who said the Steelers linebacker would like to play for the Lions.
"He wants to come back here," said Brian Blackburn, Foote's friend. "This is the last year of his contract, and he wants to come back here and play for the Lions for about four years and call it quits after that."
Foote is signed through next season but is scheduled to earn $2,885,000 and he has Lawrence Timmons, the team's first-round draft choice in 2007, behind him. Foote likely would resist if the Steelers request he take a pay cut, leaving the choice in their hands to pay him or release him. They also could try to negotiate an extension, but with Timmons in the picture, that might be a difficult decision.

Crazy like a fox. Detroit has lots of salary cap money.

Bingo. Over 40 mil isn't it?

I'd be all for that signing.

Given he's won 2 rings, he's probably content to make some money and play in his home state. Does he know the Lions are his home state's team???

This offseason, it's almost like Belichick is saying, "I'm never going to let that happen again."

The Lions may have been 0-16 but the cubbard is not bare. They have a lot of good young talent. Add a QB (Cassel??) and a couple of seasoned vets that know how to win and they could be a surprise team. it wasn't as if they were blown out 16 times.

I think the Lions are rotten at the head. I think the Ford family are their own worst enemy. I don't think William Clay Ford really cares about the team and seems disinterested in making sure the team gets competitive. Remember the guys running the show were the guy who were working directly under Matt Millen. It isn't like they made a massive change in management. I expect the Lions to be bottom dwellars for a long while.

I can't disagree with any of that. But looking at if from a pure talent stand point, its not as bad as it looks. But yes from the ownership on down they are severly mismanaged.

William Clay Ford has much more important problems than the Lions

to worry about.

I think guys like Foote and Clark Haggans (a nobody now) are simply products of the Dick Lebeau system. He'll cash in like other SB system guys, deposit his signing bonus and hover back down to mediocrity in a defense with no one around him.

Thats why its the biggest travisty in the NFL that one of the best WRs in the game - Calvin Johnson is overshadowed by his teams ineptness thus keeping his talent under wraps
