This week we have two first-time winners, who missed by only a single point.

JAYHAWKS34 predicted 21-10, thinking the Patriots would score three touchdowns, instead of the two touchdowns and two field goals they actually scored.

Bill B. predicted 19-10, apparently thinking they would score one touchdown and four field goals,
or maybe two TDs (one with a missed extra point) and two FGs,
or maybe two TDs, one FG, and a safety,
or maybe six FGs and an extra point.
Whatever. Bill B. has been playing the Predict the Score contest since the very first one -- September 2005 -- and has finally broken through for his first win!

The season standings jumbled a little bit this week. Bostonian1962 held on to his first place rank, and jbb9s gained a point to tie him. But JAYHAWKS34, with his overall win this week, climbed all the way from 14th place to form a three way tie for first! And noone believed me when I said the contest was still wide open... 30 players less than 3 TDs off the lead!

Coming here to play this game is one of the highlights of the football season to me. I usually stink at it. A few years ago I held onto last place until the last game of the season. It feels good to finally win, but as it usually works out for me, my crowing rights will only last for a short week.

And BTW, I was thinking 1 TD and 4 FGs. We move the ball well, but struggle in the end zone.

The mulligan is a good idea, I certainly couldn't live without it in the golf course! At the end of the season I'll have look at the season results and evaluate how a mulligan would have affected them. If it makes the competition better I might add a mulligan.

The average score (median, actually, for those who know how statistics work) is more of a penalty than you may think, since most of the leaders have an average score below the overall average. But the whole purpose of a grace week is to avoid a drastic penalty for missing a week. This is a friendly contest more than anything, and I wanted to strike a balance between rewarding someone for not playing and making the penaly so great they just give up.

Too complicated, in my opinion. Simplicity is a virtue in something like this. And by announcing what the penalty score is, I am also telling them the average (median) score, giving them a rough idea of how the field as a whole did.

Also, you need to cut off the season standings somewhere... too many people from other teams enter, as well as Pats fans who only show up after a win. About 200 people have played this season who aren't in the season standings, including them would IMHO make the season standings a lot less meaningful.

Actually, since I usually post the results and the new contest near the end of the week before the next game (to prevent it from scrolling off the first page) your reign will last more than a week. I am glad you enjoy the contest!

Yeah, I guess I didn't give enough consideration to all those that enter once or twice and never return. Obviously there's no point in including somebody who hasn't entered in a month or two.

I don't know why, I guess the idea of somebody who didn't play outscoring others got under my skin for some reason. If the high score can be easily eliminated that would be nice, but you may be right, by the end of the season it's probably not going to make much of any difference at all.
