★Key Points

  • Schefter confirms Patriots remain "lead contender" for AJ Brown trade.
  • Eagles likely trade AJ Brown on or shortly after June 1st.
  • June 1st allows Eagles to spread Brown's significant dead cap money.
  • Brown's reunion with Mike Vrabel strongly links him to New England.
  • Schefter dismisses Rams, Jaguars as serious threats for Brown's services.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter sat down with Ty Schmit of The Pat McAfee Show earlier this week, discussing Brown’s future.  The Philadelphia Eagles receiver remains the topic of trade rumors, with the Patriots said to be Brown’s likely destination.

Most reports have put June 1st as the key date, given the financial implications for his current team.  Brown signed a 3-year, $96 million deal back in 2024, and moving him after June 1st allows the Eagles to spread his massive dead cap money across this year and next year, whereas moving him prior would have hampered them heading into 2026.

Being reunited with Mike Vrabel appears to be how Brown’s story will play out.  However, there has been some chatter as of late, with both the Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars among clubs that have said to potentially enter the mix, creating some competition for his services.

Still, despite those rumors, Schefter believes the Patriots remain his likely destination.

“Well, it now feels like the closer we get to June 1st, the more AJ Brown chatter is starting to pick up,” said Schefter. “And we’re now starting to hear about other teams entering the mix. I was on a Philadelphia radio show this morning. They brought up the idea that the Rams could be getting back in. They brought up the idea that the Jaguars could be getting back in. All of a sudden, that’s interesting.”

It’s been a long offseason for the disgruntled receiver, whose future has been in question for most of the offseason. While some wonder if he might remain with the Eagles, Schefter believes that when the dust settles, Brown won’t be in Philadelphia when the season kicks off in September.

“I will remain in the camp that we’ve been in for the last 6, 7 weeks, which is that I still think he’s getting traded,” said Schefer.  “I still think he’s getting traded on or shortly after June 1st, I still think that the New England Patriots are going away the lead contender to land AJ Brown this offseason.”

Despite various whispers about potential suitors that could compete with New England, that doesn’t appear to be a factor. Schefter doesn’t seem to believe another team will move the needle when it comes to Brown ending up in Foxboro. In fact, he sounds as if the only thing keeping this from happening to this point has simply been the calendar.

“I don’t care what other teams come up in connection with AJ Brown trade talks between now and June 1st,” said Schefter.  “Don’t care about what other conversations there are. These other teams have had their opportunities throughout the offseason.”

“There were conversations with the Rams that did not result in a deal. I don’t know about Jacksonville. I don’t even know where that’s coming from, but I still think that the New England Patriots make the most sense. And I still think that when all is said and done, as we’ve said, that the Patriots will wind up agreeing to a deal that will land A.J. Brown in New England and reunite him with Mike Vrabel as those two men move forward.”

“To me, that’s what I’m waiting to see have happen. It’ll be the two sides coming together, finalizing a deal, shaking on it, processing it. But that’s still the way that I’m expecting it to go, no matter how much chatter we hear between now and June 1st.”

As the days tick down, it feels like it’s just a matter of time. Once one week from Monday gets here, Schefter believes Brown will be a Patriot.

“I think again, June 1st, that’s when I’m expecting it to happen,” said Schefter.  “The Eagles have been waiting for that date to make it happen. I don’t know why they wouldn’t make it happen right on that date or shortly thereafter.”
