Drake Maye this season

QBR: Fifth

PFF grade: Fourth

PFF passing grade: Fourth

EPA (expected points added) per play: Third

CPOE (completion percentage over expected): Second

Success rate: Sixth

Adjusted completion percentage: Second

Yards Per Attempt: Fourth

First player in NFL history to Pass for 4,000 yards, Rush 500 yards, and have a Completion Percentage >69% through 1st 20 games.

Three times with 80% Completion %> 80.  Brady has done it 4 times.  Maye has done it in 7 games.

Completion %: 87.3 Fourth

Zero Turnover Worthy Plays against Tennessee

CPOE above 80%: 15 players have done that this season, Maye has 5 of those!

The only players in NFL history to throw for 1,500+ yards and 10+ passing TDs while completing at least 75% of their passes through the first seven games of a season: Drew Brees (2018) and Drake Maye

Drake Maye is a legitimate candidate for MVP if he keeps playing like this!

Offensive Line Breakdown

Titans Game                                 Season

Overall Offense Pass Blck Run Blck Sacks QB Hits Hurries Pressure
Campbell 68.3 (24) 60.8 70.1 60.6 2 3 10 15
Wilson 48.2 (94) 59.1 49 61 2 4 9 15
Bradbury 64.1 (17) 74.6 78.2 73.3* 0 2 3 5
Onwenu 71.2 (15) 58.9 75.1 52.5 0 1 9 10
Moses 66.9 (31) 64.8 80.4 53 1 2 7 10

Bradbury had his highest Run Block grade of the season.  I thought Moses’ Run Grade was low.  Early when Jeffrey Simmons was still in the game Moses dominated and sealed the edge on the Stevenson TD.

Offensive Excellence

Kayshon Boutte has a 99.5 grade on deep passes.  Of his 20 receptions this year 18 have gone for a 1st down or TD.   Boutte has taken the reins on the number 2 WR on the team.  What a jump for a player that was rumored to be on the trade block at the Draft.  The 6th round draft pick was in the Bill Belichick doghouse for not getting two feet down inbounds.  He looks like a steal now.

I said in my post-game Good, Bad and Ugly article that Rhamondre Stevenson was good after 1st contact.  He had 3.43 yards after 1st contact.

Jekyll and Hyde Defense

The Patriots started out slow against the Titans allowing Ward to pass right down the field.  But upon closer examination the Patriots came out in a Heavy 5-3-3 Defense with Williams, Tonga and Barmore in the interior and Landry as a hand in the dirt Edge along with Tavai as a standup Edge player on the line.  The three Linebackers were Dugger, Elliss and Spillane.   Tavai ended up in a mismatch with rookie TE Gunnar Helm for a 10-yard pass play.  This is the 2nd week in a row that the initial Defensive play call was wrong.  The Patriots were obviously trying to stop the run and make Ward a passer.  On the next play Carlton Davis was covering Elic Ayomanor on a shallow cross, when Ayomanor bumped him beyond 5-yards (should have been Offensive Pass Interference) and knocked him off stride and down to the ground for an open 20-yard gain.  The Titans tried to run on two consecutive plays and got 4 yards, leaving 3rd and long where Ward threw behind his receiver.  Titans tried (and made) a 49-yard Field Goal.

The Patriots Defense adjusted and shut down the Titans after the long 38-yard TD in which Criag Woodson blew the deep coverage on a Chimere Dike crosser.  Credit Defensive play caller Zak Kuhr for making the adjustment.

Marte Mapu had 8 tackles in just 20 plays.  His tackling after the 8:46 mark of the 4th Quarter was superb.  He had 7 of those tackles in that short period.  All checkdown where he kept the receiver in front of him.

Christian Barmore was a beast with 4 QB Pressures

Chaisson with 2 sacks against Tennessee, now has 4.5 on the season.  Looks like he is finally showing what he could do as a former 1st round selection.

Tennessee Plays Two High Safeties (THS)

The Titans saw the game video of what Drake Maye had been doing to Single High Safety defense and decided to give up the run to protect against Maye.  It didn’t work!  The Patriots were able to establish the run and gashed them for 175 yards on the ground.   When the Patriots had the lead in the second half, they reverted to Single High Safety and brought another defender in the box.  If Josh McDaniel wanted to throw, Maye would have a field day.  They were just trying to run some time off the clock.  Tennessee played THS 64.3% of the time.  Maye had faced Single High Safety at the highest rate of any QB in the 1st 6 games.  Opponents stacking the box may be the biggest reason the Patriots run game has been so poor this year.

Injuries

The Patriots have been relatively healthy this season with Christian Gonzalez missing the 1st 3 games and Antonio Gibson’s ACL tear being the most serious.  The pass defense is much better with Gonzalez in there.  Tennessee lost three key players during the game with Jeffrey Simmons with a hamstring, L’Jarius Sneed and Jihad Ward getting hurt during the game.

Patriots Claim Former Titan on Waivers

Caleb Murphy, 25, originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Tennessee Titans in 2023 out of Ferris State. The 6-foot-3, 254-pounder, played in three games as a rookie, primarily on special teams. He played two games with Tennessee in 2024, before being released. He then was signed by the Chargers to the practice squad and was elevated to the active roster and played in three games. Murphy was released by the Chargers on Oct. 18, 2025 after playing in six games.

Overall, he has played in 14 regular season games and has 9 total tackles and 8 special teams tackles.  Another one of those Vrabel guys.  The Chargers tried to sneak him through waivers on Game Day but the Patriots Front Office was sharp and claimed him for their open roster spot.  They have been playing with 52 players since Antonio Gibson went on IR with the knee injury.  Murphy ran a 4.81 40, which is slow for a Linebacker.
