Former Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has gotten a fresh start down in Jacksonville, and so far, he’s certainly made the most of it.

Jones is currently in a battle with veteran C.J. Beathard for the back up spot behind Trevor Lawrence, and Jones appears poised to possibly seize that role.

Over the weekend against Tampa Bay, Jones went out and completed 16-of-23 (69.6%) for 210 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-7 win over the Buccaneers.

It’s obviously a giant step forward for a player who was a shell of himself at the end of last season, and Jerod Mayo said on Monday he’s glad to see him doing well.

“Look, I wish nothing but the best for Mac, and he’s having a good preseason, and I’m happy for him,” said Mayo.  “I always talk about these are long term relationships. You guys have heard me say that, and I wish him nothing but the best. Unless he’s playing against the Patriots.”

Through two games, overall, Jones has completed 25-of-34 (73.5%) for 308 yards and his two touchdowns.  He’s also yet to throw an interception during game action so far this preseason.

Last week he completed 9-of-11 (81.8%) for 98 yards, while Beathard went 7-of-14 for 125 yards and a touchdown.

Beathard has completed a paltry 12-of-21 (57.1%) for 165 yards and a TD so far this preseason, but the bigger issue appears to be he suffered a reported groin injury that may have opened the door for Jones to overtake him on the depth chart.

Many believed Jones would be a viable back up elsewhere in the NFL and so far, the former Patriot appears to be on the verge of doing just that.  For now, he’ll have to try and string together another strong performance when the Jaguars will close out the exhibition season Friday night in Atlanta in their finale against the Falcons.
