The New England Patriots 2022 rookie class made great strides in their debuts, and two who saw primary action on special teams gained well-deserved recognition by the Pro Football Writers Association (PFWA) this week.
On Tuesday, the PFWA revealed its annual all-rookie team, and Marcus Jones and Brenden Schooler each earned spots.
Jones, the Patriots third-round pick out of the University of Houston, led the NFL in total punt return yards (362) and punt return yard average (12.5). He was also one of just three players in the NFL this season to return a punt for a touchdown, a game-winner against the New York Jets with time expiring in the fourth quarter. The PFWA also awarded Jones with spots on their All-NFL and All-AFC teams.
As for Schooler, he earned a spot on the Patriots opening-day roster out of training camp after going undrafted. Earning a surprise spot over veteran special teamer Justin Bethel. In 2022, Schooler completed the season tied for second among Patriots’ special teamers by logging 330 snaps. He also recorded 14 tackles, two fumble recoveries, recovered a blocked punt, and got one uncomfortable reaction from his head coach.
DaMarcus Mitchell, Brenden Schooler, and Raleigh Webb all set key blocks here to spring Marcus Jones.
