In one of the first major moves of the offseason, the New England Patriots released linebacker Kyle Van Noy on Monday.

The decision to cut Van Noy cleared roughly $4 million in salary cap space.

On Wednesday, Van Noy took to his social media accounts to voice his appreciation for New England, tweeting a farewell message and sharing a photo of his son with a second message on Instagram.

Teammates Devin McCourty and Davon Godchaux reacted to the news.

Back in 2016, Van Noy joined the Patriots for the first time following a trade with the Detroit Lions and helped the team reach three straight Super Bowls, winning two. During those nine playoff games, Van Noy logged 41 total tackles, 4.5 sacks and and three forced fumbles.

In 2020, Van Noy signed with the Miami Dolphins but rejoined the Patriots in 2021 on a two-year contract.

Over 16 games this past regular season, Van Noy tallied 66 tackles, five sacks, two forced fumbles, and one interception.

The decision to release Van Noy may be the start of a shift to get younger at the linebacker position. Fellow linebackers Dont’a Hightower, Jamie Collins and Ja’Whaun Bentley are also entering free agency this offseason.
