While reports on Monday had indicated the Patriots had expressed a desire to try and keep contract negotiations going with offensive lineman Joe Thuney, it appears Kansas City may have closed them.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Thuney received a massive deal with the Chiefs, agreeing to a five-year, $80 million contract with the club.
Thuney’s loss is disappointing as he’s been terrific during his career, but it’s not exactly shocking. He was expected to receive attention in free agency and it appears he caught the eye of Kansas City, who wanted to add a quality lineman to their offense. They’re certainly getting that in Thuney, who will now be responsible for blocking for and protecting Patrick Mahomes for Andy Reid’s offense.
The veteran lineman was originally selected in the 3rd-round by the Patriots (78th overall) back in 2016 out of North Carolina State.
