It appears the Patriots remain busy as they continue getting their roster in order.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, New England is trading veteran offensive tackle Marcus Cannon to Houston in exchange for draft picks. The Boston Globe’s Jim McBride had more information on the compensation, as he reported that the two teams are swapping selections in rounds four, five and six of the upcoming draft, citing a league source.
The move isn’t a surprise as Cannon’s future appeared to be in doubt, so the fact the Patriots were able to complete a trade at all was good news. Mike Reiss reported on Sunday that a source close to Cannon told him “the writing was on the wall” for him to be cut, which would reportedly save the team about $6.3 million in cap space. Reiss also confirmed that Cannon had yet to report to Foxboro after opting out for the 2020 season.
The veteran offensive lineman was a former fifth-round pick by the Patriots (138th overall) back in 2011 and spent his entire career in New England. The 32-year-old appeared in 115 games with 69 starts before opting out due to COVID-19 in 2020.
