Just hours after a positive update from head coach Bill Belichick, New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was hit with another setback on Monday following news that he was placed on the teams COVID-19 reserve list according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

As of this time, it remains unknown if Edelman himself contracted the virus or came in close contact with someone who has, but each situation warrants placement on the list.

Edelman has not seen game action since Week 7 after he was place on injured reserve following surgery on his knee.

According to NFL COVID-19 protocols, Edelman must now miss 10 days of work unless he is asymptomatic and, after five days, can produce two negative COVID tests within 24 hours.

Prior to his placement on the list, Edelman was eligible to come off injured reserve for the past two weeks but the Patriots did not activate the former Super Bowl MVP.

Speaking with WEEI in Boston Monday afternoon, Belichick had the following to say about Edelman’s health.

“I know he’s working extremely hard and I would certainly never count Julian out of anything,” said Belichick. “He’s got a tremendous will and work ethic and very competitive. Football is very important to him, so it would take a lot for me to count him out, put it that way.”

“I think Julian has made a lot of progress in the last couple of weeks. I talked to him the other day and [he’s] certainly feeling better and able to do a little more each day. We’ll take it day-by-day and see how it goes.”

In six games played this season, Edelman has 21 receptions for 315 yards and no touchdowns.

A few of Edelman’s teammates shared their reaction to the news.
