While the first game of the NFL season already carries a lot of emotion, for Patriots safety Devin McCourty, he had to play with an even heavier heart on Sunday.

Back on May 24th, Devin and his wife Michelle tragically lost their daughter Mia as the result of a stillbirth, she was the couples third child.

Following Sunday’s win over the Dolphins, Devin shared a heartfelt message over his Instagram revealing his struggles since her passing and how football has helped him through the tough times.

“A lot of emotions taking the field today. Back in May I didn’t really think about football all I could think about was trying to lead my family through the hardest time ever…God has pulled me and @dr_yimac32 through…And it felt great being back on the field with my guys. Thank you football”.

In addition to the posting, McCourty wrote, “Daddy’s Angel. RIP Mia McCourty” on his cleats before he took the field.

The McCourty’s have two other children, a three-year old daughter Londyn, and two-year old son, Brayden.

Devin and the Patriots defense would play lights out against the Dolphins, holding Ryan Fitzpatrick to 191 passing yards and forcing three interceptions while their rushing attack was limited to just 87 yards.
