While the NFL may already have an inadvertent history of using artificial crowd noise in years past, the 2020 season could see its “legal” usage for the first time as most teams open with no fans in attendance during the month of September.
Back on August 19th, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the league is considering a policy that would enable the artificial sounds to be heard in all stadiums.
During practice on Tuesday, the New England Patriots pumped some crowd noise onto the Gillette Stadium practice fields in an effort to prepare the players.
A few members of the media tweeted out their comments on the unusual sounds.
#Patriots are pumping in noise for their first 11-on-11 period of the day. It sounds like high winds.

Patriots are pumping in some bizarre crowd noise for team drills. Sounds like they had an intern stand on a beach near the airport.

Patriots practice concludes. Full pads. Cam Newton still in control at QB. One of the more interesting things to me was when “crowd noise” was introduced; instead of loud, blaring music it was more ambient — almost like a baseball crowd. Another reminder this is a different year.
