Bill Belichick To Be Presented With Key To The City Of AnnapolisKim Klement - USA TODAY Sports

The accolades and honors keep coming for New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick over his illustrious career, but this latest one may have a very special place to his heart.

On Wednesday, Belichick’s hometown of Annapolis, Maryland announced that he will be presented with the key to the city at halftime of the Navy-Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse game on Saturday, March 14.

“I am humbled and honored to be recognized by Mayor Buckley and the City of Annapolis,” said Belichick.  “I would like to thank Admiral Buck and Chet Gladchuk for allowing me to receive the key in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.  I loved the years I spent growing up in Annapolis and at the Naval Academy and I always look forward to returning.  I am proud to be an Annapolitan!”

Belichick spent much of his young life learning football at the Naval Academy in Annapolis where his father Steve was a coach for 30 years.

In 1970, Belichick graduated from Annapolis High School, playing both football and lacrosse.

“I simply love the fact that the winningest coach in NFL history comes back to Annapolis to watch college lacrosse,” said Mayor Buckley. “There is something about this City that keeps people grounded and I’d like to think that growing up here played a role in the success he has found throughout his life. Welcome back coach!”

Belichick’s close relationship with the Naval Academy over recent years is well documented.

Just last season the team lent a plane for Navy football to fly in style to their bowl game and Belichick frequently visits the campus to speak to the student athletes.

If you happen to be in Maryland and would like to see coach Belichick receive the honor, tickets can be purchased HERE.
