CLARK: History Says Patriots Headed to Santa Clara

🕑 Read Time: 1 minutes

An interesting stat was Tweeted by the Wall Street Journal’s Kevin Clark on Sunday night after he pointed out some numbers that certainly reflect the Patriots’ chances of making it to Santa Clara in February.

According to Clark, there have been 21 NFL teams who have opened the season at 8-0 during the Super Bowl era, with all of them making the postseason.  To take it a step further, 12 of them went on to play in the Super Bowl, while eight of them going on to become Super Bowl Champions.

The Patriots obviously fall into that category after their unbeaten start this season.  However, as we all remember, they were 8-0 in 2007 and ended up on the wrong end of a 17-14 loss to the Giants in Arizona a couple of months later.

There’s still half a season remaining and a lot can happen between now and then.  For now one can only hope the Patriots end up adding to this total and make it 9-of-13 for teams in this category in the NFL’s record books.
