According to CNNSI.com the Patriots apparently tried to trade up to the fifth spot, with the intent to take linebacker Vernon Gholston who was selected by the Jets with the 6th overall selection but were turned down by the Kansas City Chiefs.

The NFL Network reported that it came down to between the Patriots and the Saints, who reportedly offered the Chiefs their 1st round pick for this year (No. 10, which ended up going to New England), next year’s first round pick, and this year’s 2nd round pick (No. 40) in order to move up to five so they could take LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey.

That was a high price to move up to that spot, so it comes as no surprise that New England stayed out of the bidding. Even with that good of an offer Kansas City didn’t bite anyway, and held onto that selection and took Dorsey themselves.
