Glenn Fined by Team For Refusing Workout

FOXBORO, MA — Things just continue to get worse for wide receiver Terry Glenn.
According to the Boston Globe Glenn was recently fined $4,000 for refusing to work out on a StairMaster last Wednesday immediately after running on his sore right hamstring. Glenn is already out $9 million in bonuses and is playing for a minimum salary of about $30,000 per game.
Glenn is upset, and told the Globe that he’s going to have to fight the Patriots latest action against him.
“I have to,” Glenn told the newspaper. “They’re only paying me a couple of thousand [$30,000] a game. But it’s not about [Belichick] and it’s not about the money. It’s the way he went about doing it. But I don’t want to cause controversy. I’m trying to help this football team win games. Everything else will take care of itself.”
Belichick has generally been quiet on discipline matters and up until last week hadn’t said anything negative pertaining to his star receiver. When questioned about the situation Monday he said little, telling reporters, “Everybody’s responsible to do certain things. If they do them, there’s no problem. If they don’t do them, then there’s a discipline schedule in place.”
Glenn told the Globe that sitting down with his head coach wouldn’t solve anything.
“The only thing I can do is talk through the league, because there’s really no talking to him, or no one in this organization, because they don’t want to hear anything I have to say right now,” he told the newspaper.
After the San Diego game Glenn experienced some soreness and then pulled the hamstring during practice three days later while preparing for Indianapolis. His agent, Jim Gould, blamed the injury on the coaching staff and said he was going to file a grievance against the team and accused them of trying to ruin Glenn’s career.
Belichick had praised Glenn during his first week back, saying how good he looked running patterns and sounding like he was happy to have the receiver back. Their relationship appeared to deteriorate last week when he said that the word “surprised” wasn’t the right word to describe his feelings about the fact Glenn hadn’t practiced after saying he wanted to play the week before.
“Give me the thesaurus and let me flip through it,” said Belichick. “I don’t know. I don’t know what the right word would be. Surprised would not be it though.”
Glenn said he didn’t appreciate those comments, and told the Globe that if he wasn’t hurt he’d be on the field.
“I guess [Belichick] assumes that I’m not hurt, or that’s what he thinks,” Glenn told the newspaper. “But I just consider that another shot. It’ll never stop. It’ll never stop.”
“I’m hurt. If I wasn’t hurt I’d be out there. What do I get by sitting on the sideline? What do I get out of it?”
The trading deadline has passed and Glenn isn’t going anywhere. His status for Sunday’s game won’t be known until Wednesday when the team returns from their off day to begin preparing for Atlanta. It’s likely that if he isn’t ready to go he’ll get another earful from Belichick who last week began publicly criticizing the receiver and questioning his toughness. It won’t get any easier if he stays out of the line-up.
