I wonder if Bill wanted Schiano here and things fell through/Schiano had a change of heart, or if going without a D.C. was the plan all along.

Going to be Flores as the unnamed DC, same thing they did with Patricia in '10 when they were grooming him.

Also to protect Flores from the wrath of this board, so he doesn't lose confidence when he logs on after every game.

Report: Patriots Won't Have Defensive Coordinator, But Brian Flores Will Call Plays

This will be an interesting experiment, if this report is true.

This is essentially what BB did back in 2010-11 after Pees left. Had no official DC title until Patricia worked his way into it.

Bill needs to be more hands on with the defense. Despite losing its DC the D has to improve.

Does not having the title really mean anything? Are his responbilities the same?

This isn’t anything new and was actually predicted by quite a few posters here as to how this situation would play out. Everything will work out fine. Flores gets more responsibility and a pay bump, Bill gets to be a bit more hands on, evaluate and coach his coach a little longer before handing the reigns over, and Flores will be under a lot less scrutiny and obligation to the media. This is the opposite of throwing someone into the fire, basically.

It does mean that he’s still in charge of the linebackers, while Patricia wasn’t specifically assigned to any position after being named DC.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they gave Flores a new deal with DC money already. I think Belichick does this to give these guys cover in their first season on the job, that way he gets the blame and criticism, which is exactly what happened over Patricia’s first season. Belichick was roasted for their problems on defense, and people would have tried to run Patricia out of town had he been the DC. I think Belichick has complete confidence in Flores and is simply trying to give him cover for the defensive issues he’s inheriting.

So now we know Krafty Bob blew it again. Why didn’t he hire Mike Zimmer as his DC?

because that is how it worked before Patricia got the official title. He made that same as he did as an assistant until he proved he could handle the job. He was paid as a coordinator once he was given the title.

Flores is a very good coach and is highly respected by the players. He will work out just fine

Can you link to that report, I follow the Patriots closely and I have never seen anything reporting that.

Same deal as Marty P’s first year as de facto DC. On the offensive side, Billy O’Brien called the plays but was officially the Quarterbscks coach for his first couple seasons in NE. Probably other examples.

There were several teams that wanted to speak to him about their HC vacancies, not sure if it was due to the "Rooney Rule" or not, but he seems to be well thought of in the league..

He followed the familiar path that many Pats coaches follow.. working his way through the Pats bureaucracy to becoming a position coach.. eventually to a coordinator's job..

So who will wear “red” On the sidelines? Is it always the guy who calls the plays or the named defensive coordinator?
