The use of the term 'World Champions'

At the risk of being an ugly American, who really gives a rats ass about the rest of the world? All of them together couldn't form a football team that could beat the NFL Champion. So in effect, the NFL champion is the World Champion.

In all the other major sports the best players in the world all play in the NBA, NHL or MLB so that solves that problem.

This is the one thing i dislike about american sports. Fair enough, the NFL team that wins the super bowl is better than any other team on the planet, BUT they dont compete against the rest of the world so it can never be proven.
Its the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE! The only way a team should be refered to as World Champs is if they change the name of the league to the IFL (International Football League).

Wasn't Rohan Davey the MVP of the European League or something? He was a bum in the NFL and couldn't make it. The Rod Rust Patriots could defeat other leagues' teams.

Could go with the Inter-Continental Champion.

Then again, no one else in the world plays, but still.

Is this a joke? Here in England we have the BAFL (British American Football League), aswell as a College system. I actually have a local team, the Milton Keynes Pathfinders.

There's also leagues set up all around Europe, and you're also forgetting the huge part NFL Europe played. There are teams in Russia, Australia, Africa, Japan, everywhere in the world.

Not that any of these teams could come CLOSE to beating any NFL teams, but to say no-one else in the world plays is incredibly stupid and naive.

Baseball, Basketball and Hockey are different. Its easy to envision a team from some other nation beating MLB, the NBA or the NHL's champ. So they'd be arrogant to use the term. Until at least one NFL-caliber team emerges from outside the NFL, its fair and accurate to call the winner of the SB World Champs.

I know about the pretentiousness argument, the provincialism argument and all that, and there is probably something to that. Despite that I think the term was coined way before anybody else ever played the game outside of the US. It's probably a carry-over that has a better ring to it than anything else.

The term is a lot more dubious for MLB than for the NFL.

Well IMO if the winning team of the Canadian Football league does not deserve to be called World Champions as well (which they are not called that) then its a bit demeaning, don't you think?

The best team in the CFL would lose to the worst team in the NFL about 100-0.

They also play slightly different rules. CFL has 12 men on the field, for instance.

It'd be beyond ridiculous if any team from outside the North American pro leagues defeated a team (especially the champion) of any of those leagues. Sorry, but they call the MLB the World Series and the NBA's winner World Champions too. The NHL has the most international flavor of any sport, but the AHL (the NHL's minor league) is a better hockey league than the RSL or SEL, the two best international leagues (Russian and Swedish).

The best players and teams are in the North American leagues. It's not arrogant to use the term World Champion.

Same here, I have always felt its a bit pompous.

I always hated that term, "World Champions", a little too pompous. They are the champs of the NFL, that is cool with me, let's not extend this to the galaxy please. It is an idiotic term.

They play a sport in America, in a league in America. What they are is champions of that league if they win....

You are right though, NE would annialiate any CFL team....they don't make scoreboards up here that would hold the final score...

It's almost here gang!!!

Yeah!!!!

Just wondering when this phrase was made and why it is called this if anyone has an idea?

.

Call Senator Spector ( your Senator since you also live in PA) and tell him you want an investigation into the matter........It's not like there's anything more important going on like a war or the economy or the environment.

Are there any other Challengers?
Has any other world league challenged the NFL Champion?
If none do then they can claim it.

If another world league wants to challenge the NFL Champion, I'm all for it!

Until then we will be "WORLD CHAMPIONS"
