Player Signing LB Anfernee Jennings re-signed

Interior DL: Barmore, Godchaux, Ekuale, Pharms, Roberts

Jumbo DEs/Inside sub rushers: Wise, White

EDGE: Judon, Jennings, Uche

ILB: Bentley, Takitaki, Tavai

Box safety/LB hybrid: Dugger, Peppers, Mapu

Pretty deep group right now outside of interior DL I'd say. Teair Tart might be interesting. Played well as a NT for TEN before falling out of favor. Mayo is apparently a good players coach so maybe he can get the best out of him.

For a team that was last place in Opponents avg starting field position (31.7yd line) because of how bad the offense was, the fact that the Pats were 9th in Scoring defense, 5th in avg Pts per drive, 4th in % of drives resulting in a score is incredible. That and the D played the 3rd most drives all year, so they were exhausted and disheartened, but they still played hard. Keeping as many of the defensive players as possible is a no brainer. Great signing.
That defense showed a ton of heart and a lot of that is thanks to Mayo, Covington and other guys on that staff who are still here. It's smart to keep those guys here and reward them monetarily for that effort. It will help maintain and grow that culture and hopefully let it root in the other areas that need help - offense and ST.

Smart!

Long game - retain the talent and keep building via the draft.

Boring - but it feels good to be back on the path.
What do you mean by "back?" This is what we've always done except when we were at the end of our Super Bowl window.

Getting back Judon and Gonzo is going to make this D even better. We haven't lost anyone of consequence....yet. And he may be replaced by a FS (Simmons is still out there I think) or with someone else (Peppers) taking over for him if Dugger signs elsewhere. Lucky for us that position has been devalued a bit this off-season. Though I love the 3 safeties on the field, we still need to replace DMaC. I can almost guarantee Mayo knows how very important the deep safety is to this team.

Im really excited by this signing. Hopefully Jennings can stay healthy because he’s turned into an edge setting machine. I am a little worried about all of these large incentive laden contracts though. If the player feels they aren’t being utilized as promised, they can become disgruntled.

Good signing. I'm a Jennings fan.

But it's another "value" signing. Yep, you need a lot of those. You also need some A++ talent. My (hope) thinking now is that the Pats are in full reset mode, even though they're running it back with pretty much the same crew (very Belichickian, by the way). They'll improve around the edges, hope for some hits in the draft, then make their BIG MOVES (Hunter >>>>>>> Jennings) in a year or two.

Jennings doesn't show any immediate desire to turn things around, whereas a Hunter signing would have.

My (fear) thinking is that the team is in value mode (see Sox, Red) and we're in for an unwatchable product for the next few years. Personally, I'll give them a medium length leash before they go into the trash bin next to the Red Sox.
I totally get what you’re saying.

The issue with FA is that it’s very difficult to land A+ talent. Teams like to keep control of these guys by either locking them up for long term deals or trading them for a haul. Teams very rarely let these guys go in FA and not receiving something big in return.

The key for the Pats front office is determining if the juice is worth the squeeze. Do they feel it’s worth mortgaging assets/$$$ for a particular star player. Sometimes it’s worth it, sometimes not.

Let’s see what we do…

Tart wouldn’t be a bad add in terms of ability. We’d need to investigate his potential character issues and why Tenn moved on from him.

Talent wise, no doubt he will help us.

All in on Jennings. Good to see him back.

I also believe retaining many of our own helps make the locker room stronger.
I like that we are retaining at decent and below market rates. I was conflicted if
our locker room was strong. More players returning helps faster growth of the next season
Did Belichick lose the room??? We released some strong locker room players This stuff has great intangible value.

A complaint on here was not retaining players. Here you go.

Of course, the players we let go back then signed contracts that hurt their teams and those players didn't stick. Joe Thuney is the exception. But we dodged bullets with Trey Flowers & Jamie Collins. And the guys we did retain have been pluses more than minuses: Bentley, Wise, James White.

No problem with bringing back a lot of the D side of the ball. They weren’t the issue and they’ll only look better if we ever get to the point where the offense can stay on the field and give the D a breather.

Too bad they couldn’t find themselves a CBs Coach who’s actually, you know, qualified to coach NFL CBs.

Huh? Mike Pellegrino has been the CBs coach since 2019 and I'd say we've done pretty well at that position overall. Haven't really invested much in the position after Gilmore and seems our CBs always punch above their weight class.

Mike Pellegrino has been the CB's coach since 2019. A stretch of time that saw Gilmore win DPOY, JC Jackson go from UDFA to a two-year stretch where he had 17 combined INTs and earned a huge FA contract, and they got competent CB play in a 2023 season that saw them starting Jon Jones opposite the broken shell of that same JC Jackson, with a little Alex Austin mixed in. I know your shtick is complaining about coaches, but of all the ones to complain about, Pellegrino is NOT one of them. He's plenty qualified, because he's done it successfully at the NFL level for five years now. What other qualifications would you like him to have?

I'd love to see Mapu as a weakside LB. He has the speed and physicality to play there. I wonder if that's in the plans.

I agree with that. Hoping he develops to the point where we can start to transition to something like...

SS: Dugger or Peppers (both FAs next year right now, should pick one to invest in at starter money and let the other go to spend on a real FS)

WILL: Mapu (hopefully he settles in as a true LB to where we can get the best of both worlds with playing a 2nd ILB and a 2nd SS, all in one player)

MIKE: Takitaki (Bentley has been a good steady player for us, but moving to a more athletic MIKE is how the game is trending)

Look at his resume.
