Six Thoughts Clearing the Draft Notebook and Other Items

Belichick has a short list of draftable players.

FIRST FOUR ROUNDS ARE FOR ROSTER PLAYERS
The first 4 rounds are about getting as many of his players as he can. And, yes, every player drafted in the 4th round or earlier makes the team. They all stay for the whole year, except for injuries and Kareem Brown who was cut after a few games And those injured almost always get a chance to make the team in the second year (and 3rd).

THE FIFTH THROUGH 7th and UDFA's ARE SHOTS IN THE DARK
If a punter or kicker is drafted in 5th or 6th I expect him to make the team.

Other than this exception, I don't expect the draftees to be any different than UDFA's. I understand that folks here have great criticism for these picks which after all often are on nobody's board.

How well does this work for Belichick? IMO, Belichick is the absolute best in the league at finding players in the late rounds and UDFA who make someone's team. Often it is not our team, but many make other teams. Every year, we expect Belichick to find a couple of players for our 53 man roster from the late rounds or by signing UDFA's. He goes through 20-25 players to find these 2-4 players, often signing someone only to cut him the next day. But it work for Belichick. He has found valuable starters this way.

But let's be clear. These players are very low probability players, not much higher or lower than anyone drafted in the late rounds.

BOTTOM LINE

1)The first 6 draftees are locks: rounds 2-3 plus a kicker.

2) I expect 2-4 of the rest of draftees and UDFA's to make the team. My binky is Onwenu who I think has an excellent chance at making the 55 man roster. Others have their binkies. But to be clear, everyone drafted after the kicker, or not drafted, is a long shot to make the 55.

Completely agree with takes 1 & 2...After the first 3 QBs, not a one of them is better right now, or is likely to be better, than Stidham...and those Day 3 picks (except for OneMenu, especially if he learns to play Center...or RT...or DT...) were useless, tryout-camp-caliber Garbage.

Interesting factoids regarding McKinney & Perry...I would've been even more, ah, upset, if McKinney had been chosen at #37...

bb must have had both safeties ranked close to each other to not trade up ahead of the giants.
