Testimony of Jacoby's special character

This forum has evolved in 6 months from being a place where real football conversation was prevalent and, in my opinion, there was an absence of partisan political hyperbole to a place were every thread eventually becomes political. This swamp has yet to be drained. It's sad, disappointing and it blows. Oh, what once was...

From what I've seen thus far, I like Brissett just as much as, if not moreso than, Garoppolo.

The jury's out on him as a quarterback, but it was clear that even as a rookie Brissett had earned the personal respect of his teammates and coaches. That's a great foundation, in football and in life.

Very much this. He has a ton to prove as a passer, but he's starting from a hell of a foundation in that there's no doubt in my mind he can handle the character, hard work, and leadership elements of being an NFL QB.

Purely as a passer, Garoppolo is miles ahead of Brissett. Quicker reads, much quicker release, better pocket presence. Not a knock on Brissett, more a testament to Garoppolo's mechanics. Belichick has said before that quick reads and accurate short-intermediate passes are the most important traits he seeks in a QB, and Garoppolo, like Brady, excels at both.

What I think will be interesting to see is if Brissett can develop into a similar type of QB over the next couple years. Garoppolo had a head start on him, as he was the more polished passer coming out of college, and Garoppolo also has a 2 year head start on his NFL career, so this is all s to be expected. I think we'll learn a lot about Brissett's long term potential based on how he performs in training camp and preseason this year. It's possible that Brissett ends up like Ryan Mallett and, for all his physical gifts, never develops adequate mechanics as a quarterback. I think it will be very important to see if he shows significant improvement in the aforementioned areas, even in limited preseason time. What a player does with his first full NFL offseason seems to be the best indicator we have of what kind of player he'll become: the guys who go on to become really good make a leap, and those who wash out or stick around as JAGs typically don't. If Brissett has notably improved as a quick-strike passer when we next see him in TC and preseason, then I think we might have found a really good QB in him; the sort that would make you a lot less hesitant about letting go of Garoppolo if they're not ready to move on from Brady.

You can tell how much his teammates love him, by their reaction when he scored his TD. They went crazy. That tells me a lot. That they care for him and respect him. Add to that the character he's shown, the endorsement from Parcells (which to me carries A LOT of weight), and the talent level he possesses, he may just be the successor to Brady.

I'm still a huge Garappolo fan, but I can't see him sticking around waiting for Brady to retire.

See the Pat's reaction to Brissett's TD:

Charlie Weis loves him too: Jacoby Brissett Has Big Believer In Ex-Patriots Coach Charlie Weis

Seems like he's found a bunch of fans within this coaching tree. To call that reassuring would be an understatement; I like the kid, and they must be seeing even more than I am to be piling on praise like this.

Good analysis on Brissett. I have to agree, even though I said earlier that I prefer his overall package.

Do you have any good sources for Belichick's philosophies? It could be QB-specific or it could cover a number of topics. I would love to read more.

JB definitely sounds like the "adult in the room". I remember his naked reverse TD run last season. Reminded me of Steve Grogan. I hope he has a long career with the Pats.

You stole my idea ;)

Reagan and O'Neill were adults who understood how American government is designed to work. Orin Hatch and Ted Kennedy were ideological adversaries of the highest order, yet best friends who also understood and embraced the concept of compromise. Good luck finding that spirit today.
if you can't find it create it. live it yourself. hold others to it. reject extremism from all sides.

both sides have valid points and good ideas, when they stop listening to the other side and start placing partisan interests above the national interest is where things go off the rails.
