Not at all, that's about his worth more it wouldn't surprise me if they let him go because they were stupid enough against the Jets to use him sparingly even though he was incredibly effective when his number was called.
Just so I understand, you are saying that the decision making in NE is subpar compared to the rest of the NFL?

Yeah I was just thinking the same thing. In fact I'm kind of hoping somebody claims him. That's a great return on a UDFA.

Yeah. plenty of better RB's out there with 1000 yards on a season with no fumbles, never mind 13 TD's. Shouldn't be a problem at all.

Talent-wise? Sure, there are plenty of better RBs out there.

I would like to see the list of mid 2nd rounders or later that should reasonably be expected to start, gain over 100 yards and have no fumbles.

Alternatively, please list at least 12 players who your think that we might sign in free agency at $1.8M or less who you would expect to be our starting running backs. I say to list 12 since we would need at least 2 if we don't have Green-Ellis, and also we would be in competitition with all the other teams for those premier starters, and also in competition with their existing teams.

Make no mistake, if someone gives us a late second for Green-Ellis, please get used to Ingram as our #17 pick or Leshoure if Ingram isn't there at 17.

I expect us to re-sign Green-Ellis to a long-term contract. HOWEVER, in the event that we cannot paying an extra $800K for 2011 seems to be in order. My guess is that belichick didn't do this because it would mean that Green-Ellis would demand more on a long term deal. Belichick is saying that Green-Ellis is only worth $1.8M for his first year.

All that being said, Belichick is usually right on his RFA moves.

They gave Gostkowski a second-round tender last year, and then made him the best-paid kicker outside of Oakland.

Getting rid of BGJE is by far the dumbest idea I've heard this off season. I've seen people suggest trading him and replacing him with three 5th to undrafted rookie runningbacks. WTF is wrong with people.

Since when does talent trump results?

It doesn't. I'm just saying I don't think he's a game changer at RB, nor a player that other teams really have to fear.

That said, I like the guy and I think they made the right decision with the 2nd round tender. I hope he sticks around, just as I hope they sign/acquire someone to pair with him who offers certain skills that BJGE, bless his soul, simply does not possess.

There are four choices:

  • $3,317,000—first- and third-round picks as compensation
  • $2,611,000—first-round pick
  • $1,835,000—second-round pick
  • $1,200,000—no compensation, but right of first refusal

Which one would you give him? Right now, I'd use a first-round tender, minimum.

Excellent Query, sir, and excellent answer.

As the Founding Father of the RFA BenJarvus Green + Trade Him To The Highest Bidder Club, I think either the 1st or 2nd Round Tenders would've been good answers.

***

~ Tenders set the Floor for Salaries, obviously.

~ They also set the nominal Ceiling for Trade Compensation, for all practical purposes, Wes Welker being a notable exception.

~ I have speculated that the Market Value for Green is going to be consecutive 3rd Rounders and Change.

~ As such, it behooves us to choose a Tender that designates greater Compensation than that, in the event that somebody tries to Steve Hutchinson us.

~ Green has an extremely attractive blend of Youth and Experience, coupled with exceptional health, years of great coaching, and ~ oh, yes ~ a 1000 Yard + 13 TD season under his belt, an ASTONISHING record of Ball Security, and, most of all: VERY little tread wear on those tires. As such, I put his Market Value in the $3,000,000 ~ $5,000,000 per year range.

~ Letting Green roll would punch an hole in our RB Depth, but it's one very easily repaired.

~ And while I've come to like and appreciate Green, he is a very stiff + limited Runner: he really should've gone 4.8 - 5.0 YPC, behind that Line.

~ There is a LOT of room for improvement: Explosive players, late in the Draft, and at a dramatically lower cost than that Green is likely to go for.

Given the limitations of The Cap, I'm hoping somebody either coughs up that 2nd Rounder to sign him, or works out a slightly reduced deal with us. That would be a MAJOR win for us: We could significantly improve Running Back AND haul in a juicy Pick or three.

We're not all blessed with your masterful grasp of the Game, old sport!!

So you do agree that results count for something, no matter how you get them?

BGJE stays. Guaranteed!!! The Pats, especially with Brady at the helm is a pass 1st team. Having a RB that can produce 4.4 yrd/carry is exactly what BB wants. Hell, I'm sure any team would love a RB that can produce those #'s. BGJE only started 11 games this year and shared carries with Woodhead. This was technically BGJE rookie year as far as real game time experience. Give the guy more playing time and see what he does. This year might surprise many.

Everyone seems to live in a dream world. Wanting an 19-0 year, a RB that has over 2,000 yards, Brady throwing for over 50 TD's and 5,000 yards. I'll just settle for what Green Bay got this year, all without a 1000 yard rusher.

I think the Patriots value Benny a lot more than fans. It is true he isn't a game-breaker and isn't a guy who is going to play a lot in the passing game, but he is a guy who gets what is there on most plays. He rarely makes a negative play and never fumbles. I think he is the kind of reliable, consistent player that Belichick has always appreciated. He fits his role real well.

I'd expect BJGE to get an extension as long as his expectations for getting paid fit into the role the team has for him. I think the Pats value what he does pretty highly.

It's amazing how man so-called "fans" come on here only to compensate for GOD knows what by spinning fantasies and insulting their alleged fellow fans.

If you think that Green's 4.4 was due to his own prowess, rather than the superior ~ though clearly less than stellar ~ Blocking of our Grizzlies, then it is clearly YOU who are living a dream world, albeit an obviously bitter one.

I'm afraid you're probably right. NOBODY in this league is more courageous that Coach B, in terms of embracing Change...But even HE occasionally fall prey to sentiment and comfort zones.

The smart move, considering Green's limitations, probable $3,000,000 to $5,000,000 Salary, and the deep roster of quality available talent, Rounds #3 through #7 and beyond, would seem to be pretty clear, in my view. But while Coach Bill is far and away the most brilliant man in the game, he has proven, time and again, to be human, as have we all.

Your right, it was the same Grizzly line that Maroney as given and yet everyone laughed at the idea that BJGE would start over him. I'm not here making fun of everyone, just get the sense that what he did is not good enough in most fans eyes. Sure we can draft an Ingram or such but I would rather take my chances on a proven RB that fits our system.

We certainly don't agree on the Final Solution, but on the inadvisability of drafting Ingram in the 1st, we most certainly do, sir.

Well argued, on your part.
