Agreed. And I think a big part of that mental toughness involved getting rid of Cutler. He's got a lot of talent, but a kid who cries that much over a potential trade rumour was never going to be the poster boy for a mentally-tough team. Orton's nowhere near Cutler in talent, but he's a much better fit for what they're doing and I get the feeling he's respected by his teammates.

And you're right, this team does remind me of the earlier Pats teams, which is why I'm taking this week's game much more seriously than I did when the schedule first came out.

It's the whiner vs. winner mentality again, just like with the Ravens and Chargers. Cutler's a talenter whiner. Orton's a less talented winner. Brady's the best of both worlds.

I think you're right to take Denver seriously. We should be able to come out with a win, but this is a very loseable game.

Broncos Throwbacks

Just as a public service announcement, wanted to remind everyone that the Broncos will be wearing those infamous throwback uniforms with the vertical-striped socks.
Denver_Broncos_60_uni.gif

Most AFL owners didn't have a lot of money to throw around when the league started in 1960. Apparently the Broncos bought the uniforms used from a semi-pro team in Arizona due not just to the low price, but because the color scheme allowed for the Broncos to use the same uniform for both home and away games, rather than having to purchase two sets of uniforms.

Denver Broncos Uniform History

But what I didn't previously know about was a couple of early Bronco logos that may be even lesser known - if that is possible - than the Pats one-year tri-corner helmet. This guy is right up their with the Browns' elf and Tampa Bay's winking pirate for some sort of very special hall of fame mascot award.

So did anyone post this anywhere?

It Is What It Is Mayo’s bags are packed

Colleague Mike Petraglia passed on this nugget from the Patriots locker room this afternoon: Jerod Mayo had his bags packed — knee brace and all — for the trip to Denver. The second-year linebacker injured his knee in the season-opener against the Bills, and has not played since. He returned to practice at the end of last week, and is listed as “questionable” for this week’s game against the Broncos.

It 's gonna be 50/50 , a tight game , i think the Broncos have a very good team this year.Mcdaniels will try to pull some tricks in this game. So it s gonna be another tough game for us.

Ryan Clady

Ryan Clady bio by BroncoTalk.net

The 23-year old has been starting at left tackle since being drafted 12th overall in 2008. His block helped seal the win for Boise State in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Very athletic, better in pass protection than in run blocking.

Clady has also been fined twice already this season: once for a clip in the preseason against Seattle, and then for an unneccessary roughness penalty for kicking an opposing player in the game against the Cowboys last week. He was also fined early last year for a chop block against the Chargers' Igor Olshanky.

Remember the video of Richard Seymour pulling on a guy's hair? That was Clady. Seymour said it was no mistake. The Patriots defensive linemen may need to keep their cool and avoid being goaded into a Seymour-like penalty while at the same time watch their back if the ref is watching the play downfield.

Clady gave up just a half sack last year (against Richard Seymour) despite Denver passing the ball 620 times and has given up zero sacks this year facing Antwan Odom of the Bengals, the Raiders' Seymour, and Kamerion Wimbley from Cleveland. Clady now has set an NFL record for most consecutive games to start a career without giving up a full sack with twenty. Not sure if 'sacks permitted' is an official stat, but it is impressive regardless.

Eddie Royal has been a forgotten man in the Broncos' passing game so far this year, but despite that he can set a milestone with just one catch Sunday. That reception would be the 100th of his career. What is noteworthy is that he would reach that number in the 7th fewest number of games in NFL history, and it would be the third fewest ever for a wide receiver. WR Anquan Boldin is first, reaching the century mark in just sixteen games and RB Reggie Bush is next at 19 games. Four others have done it in twenty games: tight ends Keith Jackson, Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow II, and some wide receiver named Terry Glenn.

espn: all but Tom Jackson pick the Pats to win

Three out of four on espn's Sunday Countdown think the Pats will win tomorrow. Tom Jackson obviously went with Denver, while Mike Ditka, Keyshawn Johnson and Cris Carter took the Pats.

The rest of their "experts" - Eric Allen, Mike Golic, Merril Hoge, Ron Jaworski, Chris Mortensen, Adam Schefter, Mark Schlereth, Seth Wickersham, their computer game simulator, and their fan vote - were unanimous in going with the Patriots to beat Denver. It was one of six games that all were in agreement with their prediction.

Mike Greenberg lists the Pats as one of his two 'locks' this week. Not sure I follow his rationale - Eric Mangini - and had to shake my head with Greenberg/espn interspersing clips from the South Park episode on Belichick (can you say, 'beating a dead horse'?) during his selection.

Pat Kirwan predicts a Pats win

On this CBS Sports preview Pat Kirwan has plenty of good things to say about the Broncos, but picks the Pats to win. He notes that of the Broncos 15 sacks, 14 have come from the back seven. He also says Dumervil is more than just a pass rushing specialist and can hold his own in pass coverage. Kirwan says nobody has been able to run on Denver so expect swing passes, screens and some draw plays rather than a power running game. He also says that though Brady has only been sacked once every 44 dropbacks, the line still needs to do a better job of protecting him. To him the difference in the game wil be Brady over Orton, especially if the Pats defense shuts down the Broncos running game and forces Orton to pass.

Elsewhere on CBS Pete Prisco says the Pats will win 27-14: "Can the student beat the mentor? That's what we have in Josh McDaniels going against Bill Belichick? McDaniels' team is the surprise of the league so far, and the defense has been great. But this is where the unbeaten streak ends. The Patriots get a big game from Tom Brady. Mentor takes it." In the fan voting 74% are picking the Pats to win.

CBS' Harmon Forecast has the Pats winning 28-23 with this comment: "Slowly but surely, Brady is becoming more comfortable in the pocket. Brady faces a Broncos defense that is getting little respect even though Denver only allowed three big plays against Dallas. Broncos RB Correll Buckhalter was on crutches after last week's game, but the team hasn't given any indication on his availability this week. The Broncos could rely heavily on Knowshon Moreno since the Patriots had a tough time containing the Ravens' running backs whether they were running or catching passes out of the backfield."

As for picking against the 3.5 point spread, Prisco, Greg Urbano and Peter Madden are going with the Pats while Harmon, Clark Judge and Dave Richard take the Broncos plus the points.

Denver fan's view of what the Pats need to do

Here's a column by Bruce Allen in Patriots Daily in which he interviews a Bronco fan from Mile High Report on Sunday's game.

It hasn’t been done yet this season, but if you were putting together a game plan to beat the Broncos, where would you attack?

ANSWER — I think the Pats will try it this weekend. From an offensive standpoint, one way to neutralize the Broncos defense would be to stretch them out. I see the Patriots coming out, shot gun/5-wide. That would force Denver to take Andra Davis and Mario Haggan off the field. Now the Broncos are a weaker defense, especially against the run. Now the draw/short passing game comes to life. Kevin Faulk could have a big day.

Conversely, the Broncos can defeat that by getting big-time pressure in Tom Brady’s face, similar to what the Jets did. Of course, watching Brady play against the Ravens last week, he looked a lot better in the pocket – sliding to his left and right – than he did against the Jets. Brady does a great job of floating in the pocket to find throwing lanes. The Broncos need to try and keep him from feeling comfortable.

On offense, the Broncos need to do what they have done all year – protect the football. If the Broncos win the turnover battle this week they will likely win the game. If not, well, say hello to 4-1.

Re: BroncoTalk

Good article. a few thoughts.

I expect this will be a game of adjustments.
I got a feeling PATs run game will do more than expected even with Taylor out.
Maybe it will be Sammy's or Kevin's day.

Yes, Welker will be important but maybe Edelman plays an important part.

I don't think Denver's Offense has met a defense as flexible as PATs
and as deep. Depth will be important in mile high because these guys
will be tired by the 4thQ if not rested and oxygenated during the game.

PATs should be able to play the run and still maintain good coverage.
I expect to see a lot of short stuff by Denver as that is what Bill will give them expecting a mistake to eventually stall the drive.
Orton has been able to play it pretty safe but this week he may have
to start taking bigger risks. This may be the week he gets intercepted?

When PATs offense is on the field it better not go 3 and out too often or
PATs D will be sucking wind by the 4thQ. Several drives of 10 or more plays
would be nice.
This is a hostile environment. It will go a long way to a Pats win if they can
jump to at least a 10 point lead early in the game.

Re: BroncoTalk

Alphonso Smith on Wes Welker is an interesting matching. Smith's ballhawk skills and reaction times make that one intriguing.

Yes but ... AS had limited practice this week and is questionable.
Guess he has an ankle problem. That's one body part that needs to
be 100% if you want a chance keeping up with Wes.

Re: Broncos throwback or throwup uniforms?

Ironic that you put it that way.

True Shmessy family lore: When my mom was pregnant with me in the 1960's my folks went to a Boston Patriots-Denver Broncos game. She was experiencing "morning sickness" at the game which was excarcebated by the PA announcer. As it happened, the Denver QB was named Tripuka (basketball player Kelly Tripuka's dad). After every Denver offensive play, my mom had to endure hearing that jerk's last name.

Not a happy memory for her, but she's a trooper and laughs about it with us now.

Pats white on white throwbacks are gonna look SICKKKK

Broncos D an equal opportunity unit by the Denver Post
Seven players have at least one sack, and six players have an interception, a list that includes tight end Tony Scheffler, who got his pick on the last play of the game in the season opener at Cincinnati.

And while the Broncos have powered their way to the top of the league's defensive rankings — they are No. 1 in scoring defense, No. 2 in yards allowed per game — they have done it with the "little of this and a little of that" approach that switching to a 3-4 scheme has afforded them.

Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, who has directed both 4-3 and 3-4 defenses in his career, framed it this way: "Everybody gets turns, and in some schemes they don't. Guys who cover, cover; and guys who rush, rush. But in our scheme, any one of the 11 can rush the passer or drop (into coverage). There's a multiple of jobs that you have, and players enjoy that."

Basically, those who believe in the 3-4 (three defensive linemen to go with four linebackers) believe it offers more variety overall, but especially in the pass rush. That's because more players are playing standing up, rather than in a three-point stance. It's easier to be deceptive, to add a fourth and fifth pass rusher from anywhere in the formation at any time.

Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers, a longtime 3-4 practitioner, has said, "You can do more things to get to the quarterback from more angles, and I think it makes . . . a quicker defense."

And while Steelers defensive coordinator **** LeBeau, a Hall of Fame finalist this year, often calls the linebackers in the 3-4 "the Hollywood guys," he concedes it does give more players a chance to make the spectacular play from time to time, because the roles aren't as rigidly defined as in some other defenses.

Pipe dream:

It would be great if we could have a blowout in Denver.

Force some fumbles, INT's, 3 and Out's for Orton, block FG's/Punts, control the Time of Possession and get 28 on the board by the half.

Silence Mile High-keep my blood pressure low.
I love the competition and tight games but I'm just not feeling it this week.

Here's to a blowout!
