With contract extensions. OK, so that makes more sense. Obviously, though... these are going to be money saving moves. So not every cut we're seeing is permanent.

No way they are money saving moves this season. Rather they are means to extending their contractual obligation at potentially lesser value than either might have claimed after this season as UFA.

Makes sense...they are cutting them as they have 1 year deals...so they can have extensions AND a lower cap number this year...so basically making the move to get MORE cap money.

This news makes me feel so much better about the PATs, I have always believed they were a classy organization, so I hope this is true. It would have been horrible if TBC was cut and dry.

These extensions will likely reduce cap hits, though. Maybe moving bonuses into next year or whatever.

TBC was a minimum salary contract. He's getting more in a long term deal and we're eating the remainder on the deal we cut him from regardless... I'd assume a similar situation with alexander although I'm too lazy to look him up now that Miguel's page isn't linked to the main forum...:steamed:

I keep seeing that Alexander was released, yet I've not been able to find an article or tweet about it.. Is this just speculation or did it actually happen?

Alexander has not been released. I don't know what you mean about "you keep that he was released" because I haven't seen that at all. Only TBC, Galloway, and Matthews have been released.

WEEI and that new station are both reporting it. Also Albert Breer.

Pats1 - The title of this thread implies that Alexander has been released. Also, the other threads about players who've been released have mentioned it as well.

EDIT: Gaspar of the Globe now has it up that Alexander was released, but he's quoting Breer.

Wierd, talk about your low level priorities. The Patriots have 3 Probowlers that are pending free agents (Wilfork, Mankins and Ghost). Ghost and Mankins may be RFAs (if there is not CBA).

Re: WEEI: Eric Alexander and Tully Banta-Cain will be back, with extensions

No real money involved in the players the Pats are re-signing and

extending. Mankins and Wilfork will demand huge bonuses. What's

the harm in tackling the easy re-signings first? The Pats started with

more than 20 contracts that expired after 2009.

FWIW, Alexander is NOT subject to waivers. He has four credited seasons, but only three accrued seasons. It's the four credited seasons that determines waiver eligibility.

Did we need to release them to extend them?

Think lady... If BB values these players he wants to tie them up for more than the one year he signed them for several months ago. He believes their market value will be increased substantially in 2010, so he extends them this season under market. This is the only way he could do that since you cannot revisit a contract more than once in a 12 month period...

Re: WEEI: Eric Alexander and Tully Banta-Cain will be back, with extensions

They can afford to roll the dice on what the CBA may hold on lesser deals. Not on deals for pro bowl caliber players. If they extend one of them now and the terms of the CBA radically alter the cap landscape it could be a very costly mistake. If there is no new CBA before 2010 all of the players you name remain our property on favorable terms considering 2011 could well be a lockout season when you don't want a lot of heavy duty guaranteed money sitting on your books. Bill is tying up all the little, affordable loose ends and waiting to see what develops where the big ticket items are concerned.

It's all about freeing up cap space for Wilfork. Mankins and Ghost can be easily replaced if necessary.

Re: WEEI: Eric Alexander and Tully Banta-Cain will be back, with extensions

the thing is that none of the 3 are cost prohibitive franchise tag-wise, and if there is no cap, the pats will have 2 tags to use as well as RFA tenders

if the pats want 'em, they will stay

Seems the Pats are using some of the $4-5 mill of this years cap space in order to pay off contracts for next year. Example: Cut TBC, thereby spending $600+K of 2009 money, resign TBC with higher 2009 salary and lower 2010 salary. TBC gets his extension, alot of up front money and a minimal salary in 2010.

Re: WEEI: Eric Alexander and Tully Banta-Cain will be back, with extensions

There is only one franchise tag available (or two tags if one is transition which is useless because of poison pill provisions) but Mankins and Gostkowski are both RFA if no new CBA is signed...
