As I spoke to Staubach, three handlers attempted to whisk him to another event. But he didn’t want to stop talking about Belichick
“I think the world of him,” said Staubach. “When you’re in front of the camera all the time, he’s kind of no-nonsense. But I’ll tell ya, he’s a fun guy. There were a lot of similarities between Bill and Tom Landry (Staubach’s coach in Dallas) in terms of creativity and the X's and O's part of the game. [Landry] didn’t overdo his time in front of the cameras, either, so there are some real shared aspects. Bill’s a really good X-and-O coach. Some coaches are great motivators but they don’t have the X’s and O’s abilities.”
Before the 2012 season, Staubach and his grandchildren made a pilgrimage to Fenway Park and then stopped by a Patriots training camp practice. There, Staubach became a fan of Tom Brady as well, saying the Patriots quarterback went out of his way to speak to Staubach’s grandchildren.
“I really root for Bill Belichick,” Staubach concluded. “I don’t have anything against Seattle. Russell Wilson seems like a great kid, Coach [Pete] Carroll I think highly of, but I’m a Bill Belichick fan. Unless they’re playing the Cowboys, I’m with New England.”
