I think we should lock the other thread too. Seriously, the problem with the defense is we had to turn over every single player except Wilfork and we changed base defenses.

I predict Patricia's brain will expand so much in the next year or two, he will become a genius, while, coincidentally, we add pass rushers, a big safety and our corners and secondary stabilize.

    re: Thoughts on Matt Patricia

Whenever I see a rethread like this, pretty much say the same thing..

BB monitors all communications on the field(he is not listening to Bon Jovi) and if he does not like a call he can overturn it, BB is da boss. Have never seen a Head Coach as much involved with a defense, how many times have we seen the defense come off the field and BB gathers them together to tell them what the other team is doing..

    Patricia is fine...

Dean Pees became a terrible coach as our great linebackers aged. I guess he's a genius now with the champion Ravens. Probably become an idiot again as they lose veterans. Funny how that works.

I will say, I'm not sure i understand our current 4-3 defense with two big/ or not so fast/ LBs and one great one who also isn't great in coverage, though.

I like all three, but maybe not together. I think our front seven, maybe including another big tackle, is due for more tweaking.

Also wonder if Adrian Wilson may fulfill some of that need.. that was the first thing that I thought about when we signed him..

    Its the players.

RAC was a defensive genius with Law, Harrison, McGinest, Seymour, Vrabel, Bruschi,.. He was never as good after he left when he coached lesser talent.

I do, and I agree. I still wonder if we go with LBs that size if we have another big DT to take the pressure off Wilfork. I don't think too many three LB teams have a 270lb LB outside when they already have a run stopping, not so mobile MLB.

I'd be curious what others think about this. transitional grouping?

...and the DC will always be working under one of the greatest defensive mind ever. the idea that he's going to bring in some hotshot with authority to blow it up and install his own system and player preferences is such a fantasy it's hardly worth considering.

I think people here tend to assume that Patricia has more autonomy than he actually does. My sense is that BB has significant input on the defensive game plan. Patricia is responsible for making defensive calls during the game which BB can override if he disagrees. Also notable is the fact that BB almost always huddles with the linebackers on the sidelines for in-game adjustments, dating back through the Crennel years.

Hightower was only a rookie. It remains to be seen what he can do in the future. But coming out of the draft, the guy was really really fast, and much more than simply a run-stopping LB. So, last year was not necessarily a preview of what's to come.

The defense is not actually a 4-3 in principles and assignments. It's a 3-4 over/under that gives an appearance of a 4-3.

    JACK OLB - Ninkovich
    LDE - Deaderick or Wilfork
    NT - Wilfork or Love
    RDE - Jones

    SILB - Spikes
    WILB - Mayo
    SOLB - Hightower

No its not. It isnt a Tampa 2 concept but that doesnt mean its a disguised 34.
We will stem into a 34, but the base now is a true 43

    My key questions are....

    1) Will he improve in coverage?
    2) Will he limit the # of times he didn't seal the edge in the running game?
    3) Will he continue to work hard learning his craft?
    4) Will he continue to get stronger & faster?
    5) Will he not regress?

We saw Cunningham play 50% of the defensive snaps in 2010 and virtually disappear in 2011 only to return as a sub-interior rusher. Clearly, he did not improve after Year 1 (or 2).

I honestly feel that Patricia is an upgrade over Pees but he doesn't adjust well enough. The Ravens line was just playing out of their minds throughtout the playoffs. People argue we need better pass rushers, but don't forget they easily shut down dumervil and miller the week before.

So it shouldn't be a shock they stopped us, but this is where Patricia failed. He consistently sent a four man rush that was just stonewalled. Send more than four, which actually worked, or drop more into coverage. He tried so many different combos of 4 man rushes with cunningham, scott, francis, etc. 4 wasn't the answer. Spikes blitzing was effective but he was abused in coverage. For this game in particular, spikes had no business in coverage. Lastly, gregory was clearly no match for pitta but we didn't make a change. How could our dcordinator not see that gregory needed help.

Yes Ninkovich plays standing up sometimes. But we play much more close to a 4-3 than a 3-4. Very rarely does Nink drop in pass, he rushes from the outside. And our "Le" according to you plays like a 4-3 DT. We play a 4-3 where one D end sometimes stand up.

The defense played much better in the 2nd half of the year.
D-Line and Linebackers are always good or improving with Peppers coaching one of the two any given year.

Patricia hasn't proven to be a good coordinator but he isn't necessarily bad.

One thing is clear - Patricia as well as both DB and safety coaches have zero clue about coaching the secondary. They have never had ONE of their high 1st or 2nd round picks improve over time and they wasted 5+ picks so far. Their only good corner was Talib and that was through trade.

It has nothing to do with standing or hand down it's about gap assignments.
