Spikes should get nowhere close to that. Lee is good in coverage as well as against the run, Spikes in an ideal world you wouldn't see him on the field when the opposition is passing the ball.

    Lee is Mayo ....not Spikes.
Spikes and his agent likely believe that # is in the ball park........but BB won't pony up for a 2 down ILB. Considering Spikes' absence in off season programs, I don't think it is a reach to believe behind the scenes posturing is well under way. Time will tell

We are in agreement. Lee is more Mayo than Spikes. I struggle to see Spikes commanding anywhere close to that contract given his coverage issues.

If I was Belichick and Spikes came to the bargaining table looking for $42M, I would laugh in his face and wish him luck.

How has the market been set when were talking about a thumper 2-down linebacker vs a tackling machine who plays very well in space?

Nobody is giving Spikes that much so I'm not concerned about that. Dunno why everyone is in such a hurry to get rid of him. He's one of the most clutch defensive players in the league and one of the biggest hitters in the league.

It may be Big Vince's Defense....but Spikes carries the stick.

    Powwwwww

    (IMHO of course)

How many times has Belichick highly paid 2 players from the same unit?

Usually 1 is paid very well and that's about it ...

every unit has a productivity figure in his system ... if one unit is up another pays the price.

Looking at the link below ...
Bill pays the O-line fairly well as a unit thanks to Mankins 10 mil ... they are the only unit highly paid.

would Bill go over 10 million for the linebackers? I doubt it ... and he won't pay him more than the LB leader Mayo.

As much as I like Sean Lee, Lee doesn't deserve a six-year, $42 million deal no matter how productive he is on the field when he is healthy.

Comparing Mayo to Sean Lee is ridiculous! Mayo is a constant pro-bowler, durable (for the most part) and the unquestioned leader of this defense. And was a top ten pick. Thats why the Pats gave him 5 year $48.5 mil extension

Sean Lean hasn't made the pro-bowl once or made it through 1 full season and is not the best defensive player on his own team. And was picked in the second round. Thats why the Cowboys gave him a 6 year $42 million extension.

I really believe this is the deal spikes and his agent will use as a comparable.

Not saying the Pats will give it to him, but this will be the deal Spikes will want. And someone will probably give it to him. Again, not saying it will be the smartest move.

The starting linebackers next year will be Collins, Hightower, and Mayo.
Beauharnais will be kept on the 53 man roster to back these three up.

Setting aside the Prisoner's legal troubles, the concept remains: the Patriots are willing to pay for unique/extraordinary talent.

Draft status does not matter when it comes to second contract. If that were the case Brady would be getting the minimum. Because that's how it should be right? He was a 6th round pick, must be a scrub!

Pro bowl is a joke and purely name recognition.

Being the second best player because you have one of the GOAT pass rushers on your team doesn't make him a terrible player.

Spikes is not even remotely close to as good as Lee (when healthy). They overpaid, but mostly because he hasn't proven he can stay healthy. When healthy the comparisons aren't even close.
