For all the David Johnson love, compare:
- 2015 David Johnson: 6' 0 1/2" 224#; 4.50 40, 1.57 10-split, 4.27 SS, 6.82 3C; 41.5" VJ, 10'7" BJ
- 2014 Tyler Gaffney: 5' 11 1/2" 220#; 4.49 40, 1.51 10-split, 4.18 SS, 6.80 3C; 36.5" BJ, 9.8" BJ
Johnson seems a bit more explosive based on his VJ, but Gaffney may be more agile. He rushed for 1700 yards in the Pac 10 his Senior Season and has excellent receiving skills.
HAH, had the exact same thought. For a guy that is going to end up a day two pick, he may not be any better than what we already have. Gaffney definitely feels like more of a long strider, but for me its about draft capital. Also, he has some dancing feet in the backfield. He can get away with that in Northern Iowa's read-option, but he could become the new hated one.
I think BB prefers having RBBC of average or even sub-par RB's that don't fumble (Benjarvis Green Ellis, Blount), rather than a star RB that fumbles often.
Really?
Tyler Gaffney CFB Career Stats:32 catches for 264 yards, 8.3 ypc
David Johnson CFB Career Stats 141 catches for 1,734 yards, 12.3ypc
I'll let you decide which is the better Vereen replacement.
Shane Vereen only had 674 receiving yards at Cal. I grant that Gaffney wasn't used as much as a receiver, but presumably BB has had a chance to evaluate his basic skill set.
I have no doubt that David Johnson would be a fine all-purpose addition. But Gaffney is already under contract, and Johnson might take a 3rd round pick right now. Not a gimme, IMO. Hopefully the Pats will do their homework on this eval.
Shane Ray has apparently withdrawn from the Combine drills with a food injury.
Food injury. I get those
