I'd Franchise him with the main factor being the market for corners and you could invest those #1's in a different position or groom a cb.
You think he is a TOP FIVE cb?
Like, third, to be more precise?

I don't think he's top 5. But if the pats have a ton of cash to spend and then they can't get anyone on the market due to not wanting to pay the market value then where are they gonna spend that money? Do yoou want them have 10 million left over? At the very minimum don't let him walk for nothing if he's not going to get replaced by an equal player. Buy him for one year.
He knows the system, rookies always get flagged for PI and Asante if finally getting respect.
I hear ya, PP. There is alot of overreaction amongst the fandom right now.
I love Asante. I think he's a top 25 CB. His situation (except for the 1 year left on the contract) seems eerily similar to the Branch situation. He's not a top 5, but now thinks he is.
The FO, again, will make the right decision.
I hope they franchise Graham. The top 5 TE's make significantly less than the top 5 CB's. Franchising is a short-term solution (you can't franchise someone ten years in a row, for instance). Graham makes sense to franchise (that is, unless he accepts the Pats offer) for one year to see if David Thomas can develop his promising blocking skills. If he can, then the Pats can cut Graham loose after 2007. If not, then they should pay Graham.
Asante may just be another situation like Branch or Givens where he may be a huger value in someone else's system than in the Patriots system. Not to say he isn' important to the Pats, of course he is, but they just won't sacrifice the farm for him like Danny Snyder might.
Perhaps franchise him then trade him to the Redskins for Archuletta (concerns re: 34 yr old Harrison after all the injuries) and a draft pick in 2008?

If the FO leaves 10 million in the vaults next year and the rookie cb is getting burned then what do you say? The new salary cap changes alot of things in the league.
I don't think it is like the Branch situation at all. The only similarity is that both players want to be payed. We don't know what Asante even wants.
Branch was under a CONTRACT, and Asante will be a FA. We certainly could not franchise Branch a year early. It is not as If Asante will be benched because he will not play. The guy has the choice to do whatever he wants. He is not a scumbag if will not play for NE. It is his right to walk if he wants.
Who says they leave $10 million in the vaults next year? They have won the past 6 years because they have the best paid middle class in the NFL. That is how they have persevered despite leading the league in injuries! Depth!
Also, who says they rely on a rookie CB next year?

I'm sure they will franchise him - but he won't bring a franchise type compensation offer (1st and a 3rd). So they will shop him and if nobody gives them what they want they will play him. He hasn't made much at all yet, so I doubt he'd pull a Deion with a franchise tag that is roughly 70% of the signing bonus he's looking for and according to him what we have already offered in signing bonus. Which is all a long term deal represents from a security standpoint - the bonus money. He can't afford to get too far away from his 10+ pick season, and that is what would happen if he sat out. No fines as a franchise player, but no ink either once the season starts and other corners are putting up numbers.
Asante was great today. But what he fails to acknowledge is his ballhawking is facilitated by the other 10 guys he plays with and the schemes this coaching staff creates to put the team in position to make plays. If those other guys aren't in position and doing their jobs, Noodle doesn't have to take a shot in the direction of the ballhawking corner.
He's a good fit in this system. Hopefully they can strike a compromise, but if not he will be tagged because he is an asset.
If you read my post, I clearly made the statement "(except for the 1 year left on the contract)". I said other than that, it was similar.
You evidently chose to ignore that.
I did read your freaking post. You evidently forgot to post the other simiarities because there aren't many. Please at least be respectful as a mod should be.
